Here's my latest iteration of my custom saddle work on my S3T. It's built on the stock seat pan. It is covered in leather and has Pro Pad gel inserts and memory foam inserted for comfort. About 90% of the stock foam was replaced with aftermarket foam.      Here is an S2 saddle I did some custom foam work, Pro Pad gel insert, and new leather cover.   | ||

Thanks Butch....I will be giving it the road trip test starting Wed. morning when Meribeth and I head for Colorado for the S2 Roundup. I did do a lot of test fitting while sculpting the foam. (Message edited by gowindward on June 16, 2009) | ||

Did you use a stock sewing machine with a heavy duty needle or an industrial machine? What kind of thread? Is it leather (what weight) or is it vinyl? Thanks | ||

Thanks guys! I enjoy doing it. "Are you sure you don't do this for a living??!! You should." Well I actually started a new moonlight business building custom saddles. Saddles for riders looking for comfort beyond what stock seats and even Corbins have to offer. Here's the new shop workhorse. It is a German built industrial machine with walking foot unison feed, which is required to get uniform stitch length on heavy materials. I was doing some of my own work on a old all steel residential machine, but the only way to get even feed was to baby it and hand feed every stitch. It is really way more than what a home machine can handle and get the quality I wanted out of my work.  Thread is a No. 92 polyester with UV stabilizers. The material is 2-3oz cowhide. Leather ends up costing way more than vinyl, but it feels so good! It is a saddle so shouldn't it be leather? Ever see a cowboy riding on a vinyl saddle? LOL Really they do have some awesome vinyls today, but I like the leather. | ||

Dude, I am so in on this if you are setting up a cottage industry. I have a corbin on my S3T, which I like, but that leaves a stock pan just lying around begging to be modified. If this turns into a business I will need a place in the line. |
