I started to bleed my rear brake, and the fluid in there is clear. I had a bottle of DOT5 silicone fluid, which I bought for my old S1W, and it is purple. Is this just a brand difference? Anyone know if they are compatible, or should I just change the whole setup. I don't think there is enough in the bottle to swap it all out, and the clear fluid looks good. |

Silicone brake fluid changes from purple to clear when it needs to be changed. |

BUELLERS: If you change the fluid in your master cylinders every 6 months, you do not have worry about the changing colors of your brake fluid ... "AND" the "PLUS" is you will not have those "MYSTERY" brake problems others have ... Have over 107 thousand miles on my OEM calipers and no problems(this also works on cars) ... MAY THE LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU !!! |

Silicone brake fluid changes from purple to clear when it needs to be changed. This is incorrect. The factory fill in DOT5 was clear. Also, DOT5 does not change colors. I've used it vehicles about 10 years ago, checked the fluid recently, and it's still purple. |

I "assume" that the Purple color is to differentiate it from the non silicone brakes. Same reason ATF is red, coolant is green, washer fluid is blue, etc. Note - these are "typical", we all know there are exceptions. |

I know for sure that the DOT4 in my X1 was clear out of the can and stayed clear through its life. |

"I know for sure that the DOT4 in my X1 was clear out of the can and stayed clear through its life." +1 Stop buying purple brake fluid to avoid all the confusion. Color is the reason I won't be buying more Royal Purple 20w50 after my current case is used up - it's hard to tell how dirty the oil is when it was dark purple in the first place. |

I assume we are supposed to be using DOT5, right? Is all DOT5 silicone? And apparently only silicone is purple? |

DOT5 is colored purple to help identify it. It will change to a clear after some use. I don't know of any DOT5 that does not change color over time. Just flush out the system and fill with the correct fluid DOT4 or DOT5. |
