Long story short, had my drive belt break at the toll booth on the Benicia Bridge (north San Francisco Bay) last Friday morning. I've got a replacement belt in hand and rear isolators ordered. I've removed both isolators. My question is do they really need to be replaced. I can't see any problems with the parts I took off. I'm not worried about the cost, they are only about $12 each, just waiting for them to arrive. It's a 2001 S3T with ~56K miles. Thoughts?? |

What method did you use to remove the isolators? Which belt did you use to replace the broken one with? The new 2009 belt? I have been thinking of replacing my belt on my 1999 S3, but it looks like new, with 38,000 miles. Thanks, and good luck with your new isolators and belt. Jim |

Jim: My S3 belt lasted 63000 miles.I would say depends on how hard you drive.100,000 miles on S2T.Both driven hard but S3 (26) more HP! |

I used this method to remove the isolators. Worked great. http://danielcstarr.googlepages.com/replacetuberis olators I have the Sportster p/n belt -- same as in my parts manual. fwiw, my '99 Sportster has 87K miles on the same belt. |

It's hard to tell from the pic but I'm assuming you can slip a new belt on with the special tool in-place (with tension spreading)??? I don't need it now but My M2 has 50k and I would like to be prepared when the time comes! |

Barry - at least you were close to home. On my S3 the belt broke on a trip through Montana. Trying to get the belt replaced there is what convinced me to get the S2. I would replace the isolators, esp. if they are not the new upgraded ones with the easier to install curved backing plate. Shane |

Cyclonemic... you have to remove the right isolator and the tool to install the belt. It is captured once the isolator is bolted in place. Shane... you are right about the replacement, not trivial. btw, the isolators are the ones with the curved backing plate, but waiting for the new ones to arrive. Good thing I still have the Sportster. |

Keep your belt on the loose side and your rear isolators and belt will last longer. My original 1997 belt has 50,000 miles on it. (Message edited by 89rs1200 on May 27, 2009) |

I don't know if y'alls tubers are getting improved belts or not, but... I rolled a new belt for my 1125 into a tight knot and stuck it under my seat for 2 months. I now have over 2100 miles on that belt, proving we CAN carry a spare.

Someone told me once that you should never curl your belt up like that! They said you should never bend it because it puts alot of stress on it! Don't know if that's true but I'd be careful doing it regardless! |

I don't know if y'alls tubers are getting improved belts or not I don't think so Zac. I carry a spare used belt on my s2 and I zip tied it to fit in the bag. I figured if mine breaks I can use the spare to get where I need to and I am not concerned about ruining it by wadding it up. What I have not done, which you have, is do a belt change with only tools carried on the bike. I will do that soon. I run mine loose like everyone else and I am convinced that is the key to belt longevity. Frank |

I think there at at least two different XB belts and I have used the older one. If I am not mistaken it was the same diameter and length. The last "tuber" belt I bought looks and feels a lot like the XB belts. I remember the 1981 HD Sturgis, It was the first secondary belt drive I ever saw. I remember thinking how wide that belt was. LOL |

Butch, I don't remember which model it was from but if memory serves, it was one of the 2nd or 3rd designs. Lots stronger than the stock belt and more forgiving of pebbles and such. I got it from Al at American Sport Bike. He has them in stock. Brad |

The xb belts work on the tubers and are stronger than the stock belt. Im changing over to that when i drop the swingarm on mine. |

Court was talking about how much R&D was continually going into the belts. I offered to do an abuse test to see if we could do what I am doing now. He got a new belt from Buell R&D and sent it to me. a link to the thread where I put the abused belt on Loretta. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/440981.html There's a link in that thread to the one where it started. Mileage is 18.4k, getting ready for the 18.6k service, I'm impressed. 2200 miles on this belt and it looks like new. Z |

Do you use stock pullies(S2,S3) with XB belt? these are narrower belts XB that I am thinking of. |

I use by stock pulleys, no problem. The belt I used is only slightly narrower than the stocker. |
