I recently purchased a 01 X1 and every time it gets warm (5 min ride) and you run it hard the valve train rattles more than normal. IS THIS NORMAL??? It gets really loud at times then just goes away. Let it set for couple minutes and it stops. could this be a bad oil pump or a bad lifter. i am new to buells and would like some input, thanks p.s. not sure whats in the motor but it has XB heads if that helps. | ||

I am new to Buell myself but my '00 X1 is fairly quiet, just a mild ticking noise. Depending on the mileage, it may or may not be a problem but either way I would start with checking the oil or better yet, I would just go ahead and get fresh oil (2.5 quarts) and filter. Hydrolic lifters tend to be relatively noisy by design. | ||

just changed oil and it is still doing it. When warn it is alot louder than it should be. sounds like the lifter is bleeding down or something. not sure need help! | ||

How many miles on the bike and what brand/viscosity oil did you use? | ||

22k on bike and harley syn oil. it did it before and after. just checked pressure and it is 14 to 16 any rpm. | ||

Wear ear plugs,both my scoots an '00 X1 and '01 S3 remind me when at operating temp of a martini mixer full of ball bearings. Your oil pressure is excellent. Gotta remember the only bushings(required for resistance to create oil pressure) are in the cam case, the crank mains and rods are open needles and rollers. | ||

When I ride in jeans, it's really loud compared to when I got my padded suit. Are both heads making the same amount of racket? | ||

Possible you may have a loose valve guide. They really rattle when the engine gets hot if they are loose. | ||

mine sounds about the same hot or cold. Seems like front head for me. | ||

yes it does sound like a sewing machine but the noise should stay that way not get so loud that it sounds like its coming apart. and yes the sound i equal in both heads but it gets very loud when hot or ran hard. sounds very loose. i have had other buells and sportys and this is not normal valvetrain noise. guess i'll have to tear in to it and see. | ||

It is almost impossible to get accurate "long distance" diagnostics when it comes to engine noise, whether bike or car. The best thing to do is find a local rider and compare the bikes. Not sure sewing machine is a good analogy though. My BMW motor (car) is more like a sewing machine not my X1. |
