ok so last year i had a stator go out about one month after i changed my primary fluid from some kind of pink stuff to mobil-1 20-50. (i assume the pink stuff was redline gear oil)when i got it apart the stator was covered in some kind of yellow nasty lookin stuff. i assumed it was a reaction between the two different fluids. so while i had it all apart i cleaned it out real good & put mobil-1 back in it along with the new stator. fast forward to this year & yesterday, dead battery & 0 ac volts out of the stator again!! i'm gonna take it all apart tonight & check it out. could this be a mobil-1 thing? i've had two other tubers & put 50,000 miles on them with no stator problems whatsoever! | ||

BUELLers: TRANSMISSION/ENGINE 1st 60K, ran H-D 20W50 DYNO OIL ... To current mileage of 107,486.85 miles as of the last ride with H-D SYN3 20W50 OIL ... Run my PRIMARY CHAIN at 3/4 inch loose on the tight spot(if the primary chain is cutting chain groves in the PLASTIC on the chain adjuster, that means the primary chain has or is being adjusted TOO TIGHT !!!) ... Change my BATTERY before the battery has it's last electron in it which helps KILL the STATOR/Voltage Regulator ... HAVE ALWAYS STAYED AWAY FROM ALL THOSE "BETTER OILS" !!! MAY THE LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU !!! | ||

replaced the battery last year when all this started. the stator looks really heavy duty. i can't believe it could only last one year! | ||

What kind of stator failure is it? Typical ones are pinched wires at the metal hold down plate or corroded wires at the stator. Exactly what kind of primary oil did you use? The pink stuff you reference sounds like Redline Shockproof tranny oil which does work quite well. Their light oil does generate higher mpg and power. | ||

Redline does not recommend their shockproof heavy for sportster trannys. | ||

That is weird. I have ground up two crank seals in my stator and it still hasn't failed yet. I am on my second regulator. I just use the stock harley stuff. It was sport trans but they changed it and I'm not sure what they call it now. As a side note I bought that little voltage indicator from American Sport Bike so I can tell when it does take a dump to save my battery. Other than the led's are pretty bright it works good. I put it right over the "free breathing" decal on the dash. | ||

Formula+ is the new sport trans. I've had to replace one stator, but it was because a lobe on the detent plate in the tranny broke off and chewed up the stator wires. | ||

ok for the record i am an idiot! it turns out i had the volt meter on a 6 volt scale so it wasn't reading the volts. (this i figure out after taking it ALL the way apart lol)what happened was my battery was dead after a two hour ride. after i got it all back together i checked it out and it was charging at 14 volts... so i'm like what the heck? then i turned on my after market fog lights i put on from wally world and BINGO! volts went to twelve. i wired these directly to the battery. well i yanked those & all is well now. well it was still fun havin a few beers getting refreshed on the primary tear-down again! | ||

Redine USED TO RECOMMEND their Shockproof oil. They USED TO RECOMMEND their Engine Oil. Last I heard, they NOW recommend their Gear Oil - REDLINE claims that it will not corrode the stator wires. Their shockproof works fine in the tranny... Maybe they should be called "WAFFLE" OIL?  Glad you got the problem resolved. |
