Has anyone had it go bad, Like there is to much oil in the crank case and the crank seal is still ok. The ball is supposed to stop the gravity flow of oil from the oil bag to the motor when not running. I noticed i was low on oil so i thought i was burning it, I got a call today and was told that my engine oil was so full it was half way up on the crank!

I was wondering if it was related to the oil filter size, Being that it is 5" in length and holds almost a full qt more oil. Well i had them replace the ball valve anyways just in case.

My Dodge Cummins oil filter only holds 38 oz. Don't see how a 5" filter could hold a quart more than the oem filter.

I use the long 5-3/4" Dyna filters and they only hold 5 oz. more than a shorty/sporty filter.

This was a common problem on sportsters when the check ball was in the inlet of the oil pump. I would imagine that it could go bad but I would be more inclined to look for a piece of dirt on the seat that would keep the check ball from sealing properly. Your oil pump should still return it to to tank as soon as you start the engine so this condition should only exist after the bike has been sitting.

Plus 1 on what Eshardball said. All it is is a ball and a spring that works with pressure. I have NEVER seen one go bad. Most likely it is something blocking the flow.

When my 97 S1 went into the shop for the recalls I got it without the checkball and spring installed. I took one out of a old junk sporty motor and it worked fine. Without the spring and checkball the motor will start and run fine until the oil is heated and it will loose pressure and the oil light will come on no matter how much oil you have in the motor.

If you are losing oil check your primary to see if it is filling up. If that is the case it is the crank seal.
