Sorry for the duplication. !! HELP !! Ok, I know this is already on this board somewhere but I just could not find it. I need to replace my rear rocker cover gasket - '02 X1W just over 6500 miles. I remember reading once upon a time to replace both the front and rear even if they were not leaking because the factory gaskets were crap. Does any body have step by step instructions on how to change these gaskets and info on any pitfalls I need to watch for? I have the factory service manual, but guess I need part numbers for the replacement gaskets (kits?) and as I said any and all information I need to complete the job. Thanks, Bob | ||

The kit is a complete kit - you don't need to get the individual pieces. It is the same one as for the EVO sportsters, so any HD dealer can supply, and they are readily available. I just can't remember if you need 1 kit or 2 for the whole motor. Kilroy | ||

Just did my 99.Few things I learned. -Yes change both out at same time. -Get a James or Cometic(?) kit. -MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TORQUE WRENCH's mine was a 10-150 ft.lbs and my BullOx ass ended up snapping one of the smaller bolts (luckily got it out with a punch and pick) went out and bought a Snap-On wrench (that hurt the pocketbook) and turned out fine. -I was using a James Gasket set.....when the bolt broke I had to go and buy new lowers (James was only availible as a kit) so I went with Harley lowers (they are the updated metal/rubber) and no leaks so far...has about 500 miles so far. -Just take your time...read the manual....and I found after I did it a good step by step on X1files under rocker box gaskets..... Get the HD gasket kit for this repair, it uses the one piece metal gasket between the rocker box and head. imho, the James Gaskets are better than original HD paper gaskets but not nearly as good as the current HD metal part. Tell the HD Dealer it's for a 2002 Sportster in case he doesn't speak Buell. ymmv.. but, I thought that HD had implemented the one piece metal gasket by 2002. I'm surprised yours is leaking. | ||

cometic gaskets are amazing, but I'm not sure if they sell a rocker kit. make sure to remember the inner lower rocker box gasket. The small rectangle one about 1" by 1.5" When installing the lower rocker box on each cylinder, get that particular cylinder to top dead center to put as little lift as possible on the pushrods. |
