I contacted NJDOT this morning. They are paving I 78 in western NJ. The contractor left a 3-4" lip at the two points where I enter the highway. The woman I spoke to said that they are still working on the area. I had to explain that the way they left the two entrance ramps almost insures a motorcycle accident while trying to enter the highway and that if they just paved a small transition, that we could live with that for the time being until they got to paving the ramp itself. The fact that I have to explain this to them is what is amazing!

for about a year while I lived in Nebraska, I-80 was torn up and left with a similar level difference between the lanes. It was always interesting to find a clear spot in traffic then swerve and hit the transition as perpendicular as possible.

Eshardball,

Does New Jersey have motorcycle patrols? If they do contact them to take a look at it, and then maybe it be taken seriously.

We as riders do not count in many ways. Staying alive is up to our cunning ( or treachery), which ever one works.

For me my survival on the ride to work is based upon a double jointed neck and a hightened sence of awarness. My wife doesn't understand that the ride to work is like being at Taledega on my Buell while all the NASCAR boys try to trade paint around me. If they take too long to look at it, I will take a ride over the local SP barracks. They are a pretty good group of guys and can probably steer me towards the right LE entity to help speed things up.

Jerry, Some jurisdictions have motorcycle patrol but where I live many towns don't have a Police Department at all and rely on the Staties. I'm sure if a Motorcycle cop looked at this situation it would be rectified pronto.

ahh, the morning commute. The most fun, yet scariest, part of my day. Nothing like facing death first thing in the morning. Every morning. Who needs coffee? I'm wide awake by the time I get here, that's for sure.

I'm in N.J. right off of rt78 (exit33) before anyone says "what exit" They have suicide trenches going 30ft and about 3-6inches wide in between lanes. Rider Beware. The DEMs are in control and their going to milk this construction for every last dime that the state doesn't have

I'm in Holland Twp. I think my town has more sweepers, switchbacks and hairpins than anywhere I have ever ridden. My favorite riding area also extends into Pohatcong, Bloomsbury and Alexandria townships. I can go out for over 2 hrs of joy riding and never get further than 15 miles from home.

Eric, Don't know how we've never met but we should ride sometime. I've seen a Blue XB up top on the "Ridge", did you have that before the S1?

Here is a shot of the construction hazard I hit last fall near Fort Wayne, Indiana on Interstate 69.

The problem was that it was pitch black in the morning ride in to work. It is impossible to detect fresh black asphalt over fresh asphalt in the dark. I kept the shiny side up but it was touch and go for a moment.

I grew up in warren county and use to work in Bloomsbury. There are some nice roads around that area.
I just don’t like the rolling radar that nj state police use.

They venture off of the interstate due to the many smaller towns that don't have their own PD but not in any concentration that should make having a good time impossible. This is presuming that behavior that should be confined to the track, is.

Hey, the construction that you show has an apron paved to transition up to the new surface. That all I'm looking for from these idiots. Did you somehow end up outside the orange barrels? I remember when you first posted this. Did they do that apron after your complaint?

NJ police are on the prowel.(they need the money). I must have past 3 different style unmark cars from Martinsville to GSP. The dead give away is the full dark tint on all the windows. Even though I have a Badge NJSP work on a different level sometimes.

You don’t have to behave like your on the track to get written up in nj. I’ve been written up for 50 in a 40 more then once . I was guilty , so I deserved it, but not what I call track behavior. I know police officers that work in nj and I have great respect for them or anyone sworn to up hold the law. But I lost a lot of respect for that state with the way the handled the aftermath of the wreck that occurred years ago in warren county.
Does anyone remember the state prosecutors that got drunk in a bar in New village during work hours left the bar in a state police car and crossed lanes at 90 mph on a snowy road and killed 2 people in a car filled with women and children returning home from basket ball practice from warren hills junior high. I remember because my parents lived a mile from the accident and I drove thru that accident on my way home. Turns out it was common practice for them to go drinking after court and it was well know by several state officials. The more details that came out the more disgusting this story becomes. I could go on and on about this. Don’t know why I’m mentioning this, but it has always bothered the hell out of me, and ruined my opinion of nj

That sure sucks but it diverts from my question about the construction hazard that you had posted pics of. There is no question as to the corruption that exists in NJ government. I work in Education and no one can screw up like they do in Trenton.

NJ roads per mile cost tax payers (state and fed) 18x more then the national average. As usual , someone is getting rich. That's way the state blew $6,000,000,000 (real number)on school buildings and didn't even come close to finishing 1/2 before the money was looted dry! So for the contractor to come in and fix a road hazzard....10 inspectors have their hand out.

Well after a week of no progress, I went to the NJ State Police Barracks for assistance. I described the conditions that exist on exits 11,12 and 13 to the officer at the desk who stated that the contractor will be paving tonight and the Officer working that section of the highway would speak to the contractor. I would like to think that they would not leave an obvious hazard sitting in the middle of the road. This should be no different. We'll see if its corrected tonight.

Eshadball, did you get the troopers name that you spoke to? One thing I can share with you guys, when ever someone took down my name or badge number I always had taken the extra step to make sure it wouldn't fall back on me! Hope this helps one of you guys in the future.

I couldn't help it when I saw this topic. NJ+DOT= Hazzard. I run around on 295 alot south of Trenton. I have begged them do machine the transitions between the concrete roadway and the asphalt ramps but to no avail. Uually I end up jumping the part that gets pushed up. You have to start to the inside so when you land you don't end up in the median. The ladie I spoke to at NJDOT said that I should slow down before getting to that point. I said I would if she made everyone that gets off at the exits slow down too so I don't get run over. I think I pissed her off...ohwell. At least I get to practice my knack-knacks

If I want to practice my knack knacks, I'll rather do it on my warrior or YZ, not my S1 or Road King. The almost blatant disregard for our safety is what I find disturbing. Only the State Trooper expressed concern at my report. Would everyone be so complacent if the hazard was a truck rim in the right lane? I think not but because only motorcyclists are being put in danger it is OK. I sent an email to the Engineering department of the DOT but it has only been one day. My next step is the Governor's office. Maybe if I rent a jackhammer and cut an impassible trench across the on ramp they will fix it after they arrest me

I have found in dealing with some state employees that they seem to lack any kind of motivation. If you cause them the least bit of nusence that they might have to get up off there ass and do something, it usually turns into a big ordeal. Most contractors have there trucks lettered and a phone number. You might have better luck tring to contact them directly. If you approach it from a saftey stand point were lives may be on the line hopefuly they might address it.
