Well, I put a Thunderstorm top end on my S2 about a year and a half ago and it runs AWESOME. I love it. I had our machine shop prep everything in the cylinders (new .005" over pistons, bore the cylinders and fit the new rings) and installed brand new t-storm heads. Assembly was done at home, not my first engine build (my first was my Evo FLH - it was an 80" and is still going strong 75k after I built it, with 90hp/90tq at the wheel). Trouble is, the S2 burns some oil. Not go-go-gadget-smokescreen burns oil, but I can smell it and after dark, I can see a wisp or 2 in the headlight beam. My 2 questions: 1. Did I screw it by running Syn3 right off the bat, like I've always had in the bike (it never crossed my mind at the time)? Should I have run 20/50 for a bit to break in the rings (and if so, is it too late to do so now)? 2. Is it like a car - if I want to ID whether it's rings or valve seals, should I get it hot and do a dry / wet compression test? I don't want to tear it down until I know what I'm chasing...it's too damned much fun to ride (now that the weather has warmed and the roads are salt-free, the Uly will be getting MUCH less use, lol). |

The second ring has a dot on it that faces up . Is it facing up ? |

You can get a cheap leak down tester and do it right.Or borrow one from a friend. |

Your break-in technique could have a lot to do with it. How did you break it in? |

Dot is up. Broke in like I stole it Bottom end (below the base gaskets) was untouched, done at 17k miles (24k now). I'll borrow a leakdown from the shop. After today (s**tty beyond comprehension) and riding it home TRULY like I'd stolen it, it didn't whiff a puff of smoke. <shrug> I got a little ping at high throttle / low RPM throttle-whacks, but that's because it was high-90s here today and I still have my leg lowers on. Gotta pull them off. Soon as I heard the ping I lifted and downshifted, and got down to bizness |
