I have a leak at the bottom of the oil tank on my s3. After getting the line off the bike I see that it needs to be replaced. Can I buy bulk oil line and cut to size or should I call a dealer and order the correct part? I would like to get this fixed quick so I can ride this weekend and a order from a dealer will not make it here in time so I am hoping that I can buy a comparable line from an auto parts store. What do you guys think? |

Honestly, I have NO idea what to tell you..But I think I'd check with a local auto parts store for something that might work while waiting on the right part, maybe you can repair that line or something. |

Replace them all with ss braided! The only oil line on the entire bike that can't be replaced with new hose and clamps is one that runs from the front of the oil pump to the bottom of the filter housing on the right case half. The line has crimped fittings on both ends going from an an fitting on the pump end to a npt fitting on the case end. That line is about $10 from a dealer, but I had a hose specialty company make me one in ss braid for $12. |

I get all my oil lines from a auto parts store. I usually get 25 feet at a time. |

Oil lines are listed as bulk hose in the parts manual, your dealer should have a roll. Hose rated for hot oil from an auto parts store should also work fine. |

The reason I asked is because the line I took off is very hard. I wasn't sure if it was because its old or if it was a special type of line. |

Replace them all with ss braided! Yes you can do that and I have done that on many bikes. I actually like the no braided, every day, run of the mill black lines for a couple of reasons. I hate working with that braided stuff, it is hard to cut. In order for it to look good you need to use something better than a hose clamp (J&P cycle has some nice ones). Once a braided line gets dirt and oil on it, it looks like crap and is near impossible to clean up. That is just my opinion, I like the looks of the braided lines but do not like the hassle. |

I'm sure you're right that the ss is harder to keep looking clean.. Guess that's one more thing I can plan on maintaining regularly. As for cutting I find that wrapping the line with masking tape, then using bolt cutters to make a straight cut works well. Bolt cutters won't go all the way through unless they're sharp, so cutting the remainder loose with a dremel has left me with nice clean cuts and the tape prevents the braid from unravelling while you cut. I use the special clamps for highly visible areas. For the rest of the hose ends I wrap the tip with clear electrical tape to prevent fraying, then fuel system hose clamps. Fuel clamps don't have the threads cut into the band so they won't cut into the braid or the hose. |

Phillip, I used a dremel as well. I could not survive without one. They do look great when done right but in my haphazard way of doing things the good old black rubber ones work great for me. Did you move? I thought for sure you were in NE but I see from your profile you are in OK. Frank |

Yeah, last october I moved from the omaha area to oklahoma city. Longer riding season here but so far I haven't been able to enjoy it by actually riding! |

Make sure bulk hose is rated as oil cooler hose and not just fuel line hose. |

One note to you braided hose guys, be sure that the hoses do not rub on metal // finished parts they will wear in to them I did braided breather lines with dress up clamps it wore a slot in my rocker box cover. YMMV |

Thanks all for the input. I do like the looks of the braided lines but for now I will stick with the rubber hose for many of the reasons mentioned. Off to the Napa store. |

Get the band clamp type fuel line clamps also, as opposed to the worm gear style clamps, they won't cut into the hose. |
