Check the connection behind the inst cluster. I had the lights in there go out and when I messed around back there everything started to work. I took all the connectors apart, cleaned the contacts and reconnected them with some dielectric grease. They are working fine now. |

good call, but I just checked those, no corrotion or lose conections... seems like I'm going to have to take the tank off and see where some wires might be rubbing. |

Ground loose or harness damage the ground line to the tach may effect the lights I can check and report back monday I have hd the dash apart many times should be a ground if the CEL and TACH are out, chech the seating of the ecm connectors too. |

Sounds like a harness connector to me. Trace the wires from the affected unit and make sure the harness connector is making a good connection. |

Having looked at the wiring diagram for my '01 X-1, I'm going with a bad ground. The black wire from the tach goes to a connector, and then to a common ground. So check from the connector to ground. The orange wire in that connector is the volt feed from the instrument fuse, so you may want to confirm a good power supply. The not so good news is that the service manual advises the tach is not repairable, if it has failed. And I really need to see about getting a wiring diagram about 3ft by 5ft, so I can actually see it. Perhaps Court has one lying about! |

+1 "make sure the harness connector is making a good connection." I'm rebuilding a 2002 X1 right now and even with only 6600 miles on the bike I have found a lot of dirt, dust, and minor corrosion starting at a lot of connectors. Everything on the front end of the bike (headlight, handlebar switches, gauges, ignition, etc) has a connector to the wiring harness. Those connectors are where I found the most dirt and corrosion on mine. The connectors should all be zip tied to the left side of the frame directly above the coil. I suggest cleaning those connectors and applying dielectric grease to keep moisture out. |
