Just recently, my 01 X1 started acting up. When I push the starter button, the starter will sometimes engage and then nothing. If I let off the button and push it again the starter will usually work. It seems to turn over the motor just fine however when it does work. Is this the switch going bad or a starter/selenoid?? |

Check the battery and battery cable connections first. |

It's probably the solenoid. Take the solenoid cover off (three machine screws) pull the plunger out, and look at the contacts. The top and bottom don't wear evenly for some reason and that causes it to fail to make contact consistently. A rebuild kit is like $25. Just tell them it's for a Sportster. |

Check the starter relay, too-they're known to fail and cheap and easy to replace. rt |

My bet is the battery. Do you keep it on a tender? How old is it? |

"When I push the starter button, the starter will sometimes engage and then nothing. If I let off the button and push it again the starter will usually work." This is the big clue that it is the solenoid. That loud click you hear is the solenoid slamming into the contacts and not actually making contact, but does the next time you try. |
