So I finished installing a 2002 X1 engine into my 97 M2. At first I was having trouble getting it running, and after some help from you guys I got it to run and idle. The problem is I noticed a noise coming from around the clutch area. I put my ear up to it, and it sounds like something is hitting pretty hard in the starter area. It kind of sounds like a tooth is missing on a gear or something. Sometimes when I try to start it, it hesitates for a split second and then turns over. Other times it turns over without hesitation. I am going to be taking the side cover off tomorrow to investigate, but I didn't know if any of you have had a this problem, or if you know of something to look for. |

JMK Primary chain tension ? the hesitation is normal for a weak battery the starter noise could also be the clutch for the starter |

What can I say...you guys are right again. I checked the primary tension and it was way out of spec. I can't believe that the primary chain was making that sort of noise. I guess the crank might have been pulling the chain off of the clutch one tooth early. I pulled off the cover anyway, and everything looked good except for a layer of thick sludge coating the bottom of the primary cover. I guess the previous owner never changed the primary oil. |

when i got my super neglected 01 x1 I to took off my cover and the primary chain was so loose it was grinding the inside of the case up! I really hate bike abuse-neglect, But it was a great trip bringing this bike back to a sweet ride. I am hoping to get at least 2 more different models maybe another x1 ya never know! |

The thick sludge might be residue from that center "grenade plate" going out. Mine made a nice amount of crap when it let go. But you're most likely right about the previous guy not changing the tranny juice if he didn't think to adjust the chain ever either. |

Glad that you fixed it, it is recomended to run it looser than stock, Its a judgement call trying to find the "tight spot" |
