Wow! I just looked at my little-used 2002 M2 and noticed that the upper front tie-bar is missing. Just to be sure, I looked at my 2001 S3T and, sure enough, there is a tie bar connecting the upper motor mount to the frame. But not on my M2! The strangest thing is that there are no marks of any kind that would indicate that one was ever installed. I would think that the powder coat on the frame bracket would show some kind of circular marks if a nut had ever been tightened against it. Same thing for the (relatively) soft aluminum motor mount. Could this bike have left the factory without the upper tie bar? I havn't ridden this bike much because I usually ride the S3T but I am fairly observant and I think I would have noticed a dangling part if one had been installed and was falling off. Was the upper tie bar deleted on the 2002 model? (I would be surprised if it was but I have to ask) Also, there is no more vibration on the M2 than there is on the S3T that has the upper tie bar in place. I am not going to ride the M2 until I either install an upper tie bar or find out that it was deleted for model year 2002. Any advice or information would be much appreciated. Thanks, Dave |

Well, I just compared my parts manuals and the M2 parts manual shows three (3) TIE BAR ASM.(3) part number 16219-79B. The S3T parts manual shows four (4) TIE BAR ASM. (4) part number 16219-79B. Why would the S3T have a fourth tie bar but not the M2? I am really confused because it would seem that the fourth tie bar would help keep the motor/swing arm assembly in alignment with the frame and possibly even relieve some lateral strain on the fragile front isolator. I am inclined to get one and install it on my M2 unless there is a good reason why I should not do that. Any ideas? Thanks, Dave |

the frames and motors on all the tubers were similar enough to have the same characteristics imo. i dont personally see what it would hurt to put one on.....maybe in 2002 they ran out of parts lol like they did with 2001-2002 f bodies that had to use corvette intakes court should be able to clear this up |

Well, I am relieved that parts are not falling off my M2 - but there must be a reason that Buell did not see the fourth tie bar as necessary on the M2 while they included them on S3 and X1 models. Could it be that the horsepower output is enough less that they were not deemed necessary? If not that, might it be related to some other reason? Also, is there any reason why one should not be installed on my M2? I am very interested in this one because I want all the best for my beloved M2. Dave |

It was a cost saving thing ... You were in luck to have the TIE BAR ASM. mounting positions to add it ... Lucky my replacement front motor mount had the TIE BAR ASM. mounting hole ... 1997 and earlier models did not have the frame TIE BAR ASM. mount position so "i" had to prefab one ... It was added for the same reason the tube was added from the up-side down "A" to frame ... |

LaFayette, I appreciate the information. Now I can go about some "product improvement" on my M2. Thank you very much! Best regards, Dave |

Do a search on this, there's loads of info about why the M2s don't have the upper tie bar, and info from people that have added them. |
