Yeah, it's not that I didn't trust anyone's advice on here, I just have found that the garage should get locked after I have had any beer. It seemed like a really good idea at the time. |

Ok, so here it is. If there was something that could go wrong, I did it!! As we all know I already snapped an easy out in the stud. Then I spent a few hours with a dremel getting that out. After I got it out and installed my Jim's tool it seemed like my dril was hitting the head and binding the bit so I went and got a 12" bit. It worked great right up until I snapped the last half inch of it off in there. I got the dremel back out and started grinding on it until it was loose enough to pull out with a small set of needle nose pliers. Then I ran my tap through it and took out the other studs. I chased the threads with a tap on all of them. I put the new studs in with anti-sieze and reintsalled the exhaust system. One of the rear support bracket bolts was bent so I had to go to lowes and get another one of those. Now it is all bolted up and just took it's test ride. Other than the small apparent leak when I first started it all seems to be working well. Like I said I made all kinds of mistakes but somehow recovered from them without causing any damage to the head or the threads. |

Paint Shaker, do you have a broken stud? I read that your header busted . I have a Jims tool somewhere if you need it. |

I will say that from the long experience I had I learned a couple of things. 1) get or borrow a Jims tool!! I have one now if someone needs it 2) Lowes sells crap drill bits all 135 degree multi purpose none for just metal so find somewhere that sells the right bits 3) for me on my X1 the 12 inch bit was a life saver. My drill's keyless chuck was hiting the head so the longer bit allowed for clearance. I know others have already said it but with the right tools this is not a big deal |

You have taken your first steps into a larger world. Its always good to dodge the "big one" as you have done, and YOU DID it! Congrats, a beer is in order.... |

See this is the thing that kinda puzzles me. I am a mechanic by trade. I don't get discouraged ever at work but for some reason when it is my own stuff I get worried. I obviously take great care in my work at work but it is just something about the fact that I have all the manuals and right tools to do it. I do have the FSM but it leaves a lot to be desired when you get into things like this. This is why I was picking the brains on here so much earlier trying to understand the process. If I understand it then I feel like I can do pretty much anything........... even if I do have to undo my own mistakes in the process |
