Actually... more like counting them. Some of you may already know that I’m doing some preventive maintenance on my bike. 1 crank seal 2 replace ALL the paper gaskets that haven’t already been replaced by the new rubber coated metal ones. And seals, like the shifter seal. 3 oil pump drive gear 4 newer XB pump (more volume) 5 replace spring plate (“grenade” plate) in the clutch pack Here’s the part list: (1) 17048-98 Exhaust Gaskets (1) 35151-74a NEW Crank Seal (1) 40240-89 Crank Spacer (1) 37101-84b Shifter Seal (1) 34955-89b Primary Gasket (1) 31488-81c Starter Gasket (1) HD-45206 Crank Seal Inst Tool (1) p0135.ka In-Line fuel filter (1) p0139.k Grommet (1) 26391-06 Bronze Oil Pump Gear (1) 26357-02b XB Oil Pump (1) 26495-89a Oil Pump Gasket (1) 11124 Gear Cover Seal One thing led to another and now I don’t have the money to do the XB oil pump swap or the bronze gear... my OPDG was in great condition for 10k miles. So tonight I was pulling my gear case to just replace the gasket to the new kind (I had a small leak about 2500 miles ago and I did a piss-poor quick fix). When I pulled the cover the front cam falls out… “oh shit!” I mumbled . I couldn’t get it back in without rotating the engine which required removing the rocker assemblies, which I didn’t want to do. So here’s what I did. You have to rotate the engine to get the marks on the cams lined up, which requires you to remove ALL the spring pressure off the lifters so you don’t screw up the cam bushings rotating the cams. So how would you line up the marks without rotating it? I counted the teeth on the adjacent cam (front cyl intake cam) making marks on it in red sharpe every ten teeth I did the same on the cam that fell out but going in the opposite direction (counter clock wise this time). This way, I could line up the cams according to the new marks I made! It turned out well! Thought this might help out anyone that may run into the same situation |
