Maybe I'm being a dumba@@ but, how does the gear case cover come off? I loosened and removed all the bolts, it pulls off about 1/8th of an inch and hits something... Do I need to remove the riveted cover? thanks |

Probably hanging up on the primary chain. The chain will sit in it's own groove cut into the plastic part of the primary chain adjuster. Use something to push up on the chain so it will clear the adjuster then the cover will come off. BC Steve |

Yes Pete drill the rivets out of that cover. I've got a rivet gun and rivets that fit it I can bring tomorrow or whenever we meet up. I forgot which piece in the following process is slotted to allow timing changes, but make sure to mark it before you remove it. Once you get the riveted cover off, there will be another the same size but with phillips head screws at 12oclock and 6 oclock. When you take that off it's got the cam position sensor glued onto it. Just get it out of the way enough to take the screw out of the timing plate you'll see behind it. That plate is screwed onto cam #2 which is preventing the cam cover from coming off. Oh and be careful when you pull the cover. Most of the time one or more of the cams will drop out so prepare some way of protecting them if they fall out. Yeah don't let the cams fall out or you will have to take both rocker boxes off to re-time the bastage, Use a putty knife to push the cams back in before re-moving the cover any farther, after getting timing plate out of the way and the 2 screws out. i found this out the hard way. thanks though to al lighton for the heads up! i'm currently in the process of trying to get a cam that fell out back in correctly... its f**ked up. |

There is a vent hose to the oil bag that will hold you up. And if you drop a cam and chip the lobe, it will grenade eventually. |

You'll also have to disassemble the plug that lives under the battery tray to pull the timing cover all the way out if you're wanting to take the cover completely off. I just went through this a couple of months ago to get the cover off to cut it down. |

Sounds like it is time to recommend getting a Factory Service Manual and PARTS BOOK for the Year and Model !!! |
