Still trying to decide what I'm going to do for a backrest for my wife. I can't afford the almost $700.00. Canadian for a Corbin. Does anyone have the Ventura luggage system on their bike? It looks like American Sportbike has just the "L" brackets and grab handle for $115.00. I would really like to see pictures from the back and sides of the system with the pack on / off and with just the grab rail installed. I may be able to use their "L" brackets to rig something up. I know this is a lot to ask, but if someone already has pictures taken, it would really help me out. I've finally convinced her to get back on the bike, so I don't want to lose her off the back. Here's a couple of the Ventura system with and without. They also do a low upright which is much shorter when you don't have the bag fitted.   | ||

now we're talking - thanx for foto the low loop he mentions is what I'd referred to earlier - the tall loop shown above may also be able to utilize the MX bar pad I'd suggested mebbe a Uly-style, fabbed back pad could be slipped over the tall loop.... | ||

the trapezoidal lo loop shown above [more current product?] is different than mine [rectangular, with 90-degree rounded corners] & takes a narrower MX bar pad well, now you've seen [or heard about] the universe of possibilities - a way-cool, Corbin-style pad + 3 Ventura make-do versions | ||

IMHO the Ventura rack (although an awesome product) is not a back rest. The short grab handle is to low and the tall pack rack would allow a passenger to get a lot of leverage on the mounting structure. It's not designed for that. It also sits to far back. Your wife will feel most secure with having a backrest to support her, and you will worry less about her knowing she feels like she is not coming off the bike. That's just my experience. | ||

Loren, Did you use a passenger or rider backrest for your bike. I was just on the Corbin website and the rider backrest post looks more upright than the passenger ones does. I guess more to the point, which part number from Corbin did you use? Thanks, | ||

I used the #02-SB backrest and ordered from Dennis Kirk. The backrest post has a lot of angle adjustment to them via a set screw at the rear base of the rest. | ||

Oh yeah, Ventura actually states that the rack is not to be used for a backrest. It's got a sticker on it somewhere. A great and useful product though. Good luck with the search. | ||

Gowind, right you are, Sir! - I'd neglected that the Ventura system mount isn't configured for human weight-bearing however, your caveat doesn't apply so much to the lo-loop configuration - I've sat on the back of my M2 with padded lo-loop - it's super reassuring to have that 'stop' against the back of yer pelvis..... | ||

That Ventura rack sure looks handy though. I have the wide hard bags which are great but for just schlemping my lunchbox or something home from the store the rack and some bungee cords would work fine. Probably best not used as a backrest but in the event of having to crack the throttle for some reason it would probably keep her on the bike. | ||

While the Corbin offering is the best for a passenger, it is a bit pricey. For that reason I eliminated the rear pegs for a zero passenger application. She is happy to ride on the V-star with foot boards and back-rest. IMO the Ventura equipment is just to ugly to put on my sexy old Buell. | ||

Thanks James, that would be great. Loren, I found a guy on E-Bay selling Corbin style backrests. He mentioned on one of the ads that it was 5/8" tubing for the stem. Does that sound about right to fit your seat? (Harrison Specialties) Note: Not an endorsement ! | ||

I used 3/4" O.D. x .060" wall square stainless steel tubing, which works out perfect for a 5/8" stem on the backrest. You can buy the tubing by the foot at Mcmaster.com | ||

The Corbins are very pricey ( to me) which is why I don't have one already. My discretionary spending budget is so tight it squeeks. I don't really want to spend money for a back rest / seat / rack until I'm sure that my wife is going to enjoy being back on the bike again. If she does, that's great and I will find the money to make her comfortable. If she goes around the block once and says "No more", then a solo bike it remains and I will spend my pennies on other bike related goodies. (I sure would like to get rid of that "Bread Box") | ||

The V-Star was the first,it's comfy and slow. But then I became "infected" with the Buell. It's not happy under 80mph, and she's not happy over 80mph. It's nice to have a "me only" bike anyway. |
