I know this subject has been discussed adnauseam but here is another question.
I got my '00 X1 with 9500 miles (now has 13.5K) and am trying to figure out if the previous owner replaced the rocker box gasket with the new and improved type. Yesterday as I was checking around and underneath the rocker box I noticed a part of the gasket exposed and it was orange color and felt like metal, definitely not paper. So is that the good stuff or this "sheet" was not a part of the gasket?
The exposed piece is right between the two ends of the rocker box which is bolted down to the head.
Sorry about the poor description. I just have never taken this apart.

You can feel the metal one piece gasket between the bottom of the rocker box and top of the head either at the front or back.
The old design paper gasket was in two pieces. The new design metal gasket is one piece covering both the right and left sides of the top of the head.

Here is a picture lifted from another thread. The paper gasket was in two pieces, one for each machined surface. The new metal gasket fits over both cavities.

Kalai, what you felt was the metal gasket bridge which is part of the 'newer design' gasket. It is a metal gasket which has 'rubber' printed on both sides, raised slightly in contact areas.... and it is a good design.
