OK, I searched the knowledge vault. I fear that I might know the answer to this question and simply don't like that answer. However, I want to try again. I recently bought a sweet 2002 S3T at 3000 miles that now has only 7000 miles on it, I've previously owned other Buells, so I sort of knew what to expect. I love this bike, but I really need to upgrade the suspension. I weigh about 260 and I routinely carry 20 -30 lbs of stuff. I realize I am significantly outside the design range<g>. Are there options other that the high end shocks on American Sport Bike? If not, is Penske worth the extra cost over Works? Thank in advance, free bird |

The "high end" shocks from American Sport Bike are your best bet. Once you bolt one onto your bike, and adjust it to your weight, you will never regret your purchase. I've got the Works shock on my S2 and feel the handling has improved significantly. You can't go wrong when you deal with AL, he will set you up with shock that will suit your needs. |

Richard I have both shocks and at this point can't tell much difference between the two. I have about 5 to 6K on each. I'm well outside the range, but correctly sprung and re-valved you will know the difference. I think it is the best monies I have spent on the bikes so far. Joe |

Richard, I have the Works on my X1 and my bro has Penske on his S3. The Works is a great upgrade, esp if you want to not spend as much as Penske. However, the Penske is a more sophisticated shock with a better ride quality, and has a ride height adjustment. Back to back I can tell the Penske has a smoother, more supple yet controlled ride. The Works is still very good but if the extra bling and ride quality is not too important, the Works is a good value. Highly recommend having RaceTech gold valves in the forks, excellent upgrade w/ progressive springs. FYI.....I have the same bike as yours, and some Buells have the oil pump drive gear go out. Mine did, its a rare failure. I would change out to the upgraded bronze drive gear at some point. I have 30,000 on my X1, w/ no problems so its a roll of the dice. Here is the link to my repairs: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/433883.html?1234158395 |

I went w/the Works, from Al. Just waiting for it to arrive! FWIW, after getting the Works w/the adjustability I wanted, the price was only $5ish bucks lower than the 'entry level' Penske. Decided that I didn't need ride-height adjustment, given how I ride. Don't believe you can go wrong with either one. |

You will want to upgrade the front springs too. The right rate springs and shock valves make as much of a contribution as the Works does and balances each end. Go to http://www.racetech.com/evalving/SpringRateCalcula tion/dirtspring.asp?brand=Buell&yr=99-02&ml=S3T%20 Thunderbolt&formuse=form1&SpringType=Fork and enter your weight. Go for the Gold Valves too. |

So what are my options being in the 250 range? Since my kids think they need to eat more than they think i need a new $600 shock? |

Thanks Y'all !! Based on responses to my request for advice, I called Al at American Sport Bike and ordered front and rear upgrades. Based on what I wanted (street only - my track days are probably done), I went with the Works and race tech fork upgrades. I put the first 150 miles on yesterday (Central Texas - year round riding) and WOW. The rear wheel hugs the road, the front end is rock solid stable with positive feedback. This is a huge improvement in confidence and comfort. I think I hear a brake upgrade coming on soon. What a super and helpful site. |
