If you didn't change the timing to mess it up, you shouldn't try to fix it by messing with the timing. It sounds like you messed up the TPS reset. |

Go back to the last thing you did and recheck. Sure of the TPS reset procedure? And what was the AFV when you reset it. |

First step - find the key with your left hand that says "CAPS LOCK" on it. Press it. Posts are much easier to read without YELLING I second the guess that the TPS reset is botched. It's electronics - it could *say* it went fine, but something could have a hiccup in it. Re-do it once or twice, and see if it changes things. Doesn't have to fix it, not right away, but if it *changes* it...you may have found your problem. How's your throttle cable adjustment? You could be zeroing your grip, but the butterfly could be stuck open just a hair... |

I know on my 12R and My S3 when the butterfly is completely close you can feel it in the throttle when you twist the throttle to open it a bit. The butterfly sticks ever so slightly. Get the airbox / aircleaner off so you can see the butterfly completely closed. Zero the TPS again and then before adjusting work the throttle and watch the voltage output on your pc. Make sure it's going back to zero each time you roll the throttle back closed. Then you know you have a good TPS reset. |

And what did you set the TPS to after you hit the reset? If your AFV was 100% why reset it? |

Does it not say somewhere in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL how to set up for and check you timing with a timing lite ??? |

I am not aware of any "timing lite/light" procedures but there is a procedure to check and set the static timing on the flywheel. As for the timing "maps", most people recommend leaving them alone, even folks who are very familiar with tuning using the ECMSPY software. Anyway, I am having a little trouble understanding this Statement: "..it ran great well i couldn't leave well alone". Do you mean it wouldn't idle on its own and you have to twist the throttle grip? If that's the case, then you may want to check the "cold start enrichment" settings. I know I had to fiddle around with those numbers when the temps dropped down. Hope this helped. |

I remember a while ago there was a discussion that a new ECM had to be run at 3500 RPM for like 3 to 5 minutes to calibrate. Anyone else remember this? |

DF to some extent that makes some sense on a brand new ecm. with a zero memory and need for say an afv of 90 VS 100 or 110 Robert, My first suggestion is one thing at a time, I agree with NATE on the surface it sounds like a botched TPS reset. paraphrase of stated above 1. throttle plate must completely close to set ZERO position 2. The AFV should be 100 or close to it 3. Messing with any setting other than those is not a good idea IF you must Write down what you changed change one thing at a time and test the system before changing any thing else 4. Check the static timing if you wish I do not recomend changing it unless you KNOW it is off, the indicators that are displayed on ecm spy are not the way to check or set it. Anyone ever think about the set up timing must be correct for the BRAIN BOX to have the correct reference timing to work properly !!! |

Maybe the timing is not off but a newbie fat fingered the ECM with ECMSpy and NEEDS to leave well enough alone! That is the very reason VDSTS is still the safest program to use, you can't hurt any thing with it. But it costs money and of course these guys go for the free stuff they don't understand. Get help. |

"...I remember a while ago there was a discussion that a new ECM had to be run at 3500 RPM for like 3 to 5 minutes to calibrate. Anyone else remember this?" In a nutshell, what you are talking about is running the bike/ECM in the Closed Loop mode (for Tubers: steady speed around 40-60 MPH with engine RPM between 2500-4000, with minimum load on the engine) to allow the ECM "learn" the conditions through the O2 sensor. |
