With a broken exhaust stud just before Christmas, and a few other delays, the makeover for "X" has taken a little longer than hoped... The good news is that I've got a whole heap of songs finished, and I fired X up today Not quite finished putting everything back together, but with a bit of work tomorrow night or the night after it'll be back on the road I changed the base gasket and the head is back on...
This is a little valve/damper blade I made to *try* and quiet down the race muffler, but still be able to open it if I want to. My welding is rough(!) but it'll do as a prototype...
Got the boys at work to make up a little catch tank out of scraps...
It's starting to look like a motorcycle again... Breather kit from American Sport Bike is in, headers got a quick coat of paint...

Chili, you better drill some small holes in that flapper. It won't make it much louder but if you need to power out of something you may be at a disadvantage plugging the exhaust that much. |

Shock? So what is it doing way up on the side of the frame? Looks pretty small for a shock... You mean a steering damper? |

Yeah, what is that? Looks like it might say PENSKE on it. At first I thought it might be a catch can but I see that mounted lower. What is that thing? |

Yep, it's the reservoir for the new Penske shock With the length of hose on it that seemed the right place to put it without bending the hose too much. I'm open to suggestions if it should be somewhere else. "...you better drill some small holes in that flapper..." My idea is to find an angle for it where the noise is tolerable around town and hopefully it won't mess with the fuel mixture *too* much. Hopefully that'll be around 45°, and I can still open it to 0° for sunday rides . It's not a tight fit so it will leak around the outside, but yeah, if it's closed fully I guess it won't run real well! Should be fun experimenting! |

I probably would have mounted it towards the back of the bike under the tail. Glad your back on the road! |

The reservoir for the Penske also has the rebound adjuster on it. Kind of nice to have it within reach. Plus you don't have a lot of length or flexibility in that hose. Joe |

Looks like a good spot for the res to me. Nice work on the exhaust. Let us know how it works! |

It runs I didn't get everything done I wanted to, but it's back together and I took it for a test ride this afternoon. Of course it rained, but I didn't care New suspension feels good. A little too much preload on front springs, not quite sure how I'm going to fix that as I don't think I can shorten the spacers much more. Penske feels great. The bike is quieter than it was, even with my "exhaust valve" fully open. I think the new air filter housing (which was a pig to fit) is making most of the difference. I think the steel ham can I had before may have been resonating a bit. Before:

As far as I know the air box is made in Italy. I'm still not sure if I like the look of it... but it's definitely quieter! Beautifully made, ok design, but doesn't fit well with the tank accents I've got, they're rubbing even though I cut back some of the airbox. Mirrors are bicycle/MTB mirrors. Needed a few little mods so they wouldn't fold back at high speed! They work well The brand is "Zefal". Rode to work today Ran well except there's definitely too much preload on front, steering is slow and it wouldn't take much for the front to top out. If I cut the spacers anymore they will be out of the lower tubes at full extension. Anybody else had the same problem? I might have to start a separate thread... |

Lc I have had the front forks totaly apart you cut the plastic bumper on the bottom of the steel spacer tube on the springs? I would have done the steel tube in the top of the spacer, the springs should be about 9.13" long uncompressed if they are longer I would have to ask are they the correct spec. |

No, I cut the steel spacer. The springs I got are longer, 270mm (10.6"), than standard springs which are about 250mm. I have checked with American Sport Bike, Racetech used to supply the longer springs (I bought these a while ago, they've been sitting in a box for 12 months!) but they now supply springs closer to standard length. If I was a little heavier, or the springs were slightly softer, it wouldn't be an issue. I think I can take another 3-4mm off the spacers and still have the plastic bumper sitting in the fork tube, just. Or I could get a set of shorter springs. Or I could get spacers made up with a shoulder so they sit in the spring and can't slide sideways and catch the fork tube... |

LC the spacer should be "cutable" to that length ?? IIRC the thing was about 75~ 100 mm long ( i work inch ~ 3" ~ 4" =) ) I would "ASSUME" that you only need enough to catch the retainer, & hold the spring 250mm = 9.8" My FSM indicates that the free length is 9.13" or 231.9 mm I wish I had caught this I just had my forks open for oil change. What rate are they? I weight just shy of 250 lbs and the heaviest rate is what the calculator indicates (Al's got a link to it on his site) it sounds like they are too heavy for you. |

I've got measurements written down at home, but I think you're right, spacer is about 4" long, and I cut it down to about 3.25". Spoke to local suspension shop yesterday (very helpful), he thinks springs are too stiff as well. He suggested .85kg, or .90kg at most for me (about 180lbs). I had selected .95's as I was doing a lot of two-up riding, but it sounds like I've gone too stiff. I did about 80 miles on the bike today and they do feel a bit too stiff. I'm getting to get some new softer, shorter springs and get some new spacers and start again. Suspension place I spoke to will trade my springs too |
