Is there any way to test a TPS to determine if that is what is causing my '01 X1 to not start? Other than just buying a new one and replacing it. I would hate to buy an $80 part just to find out the old one was fine.

Problem in a nut shell....My bike wont start. Have replaced everything from the tank to the Fuel rail, and ecm with known good/working parts from a running X1, and still nothing. Took them all off Preybirds running X1, put them on mine, no start, put them back on his, started right up.

Talked to a Buell tech and he said the TPS may think it is in full throttle position, and since it is off, it wont allow any fuel into the engine.

Just hoping someone knows of a way to test the TPS, so I dont waste money on a new one. I have cable, but my laptop just crashed and so now I have to get it reimaged.

Thanks.

Cure. Fix lap-top and run VDSTS.

You could try diagnosing it...

Kill switch
Clutch switch
Sidestand switch (most likely)
timing sensor
loose/broken wire
Fuel pressure (test it, don't guess)
Spark plugs
coil
plug wires
etc.

You're far from actually figuring anything out. TPS rarely just dies.

The TPS, if memory serves, is just a rheostat. Unplug, attach an ohm meter, and twist the throttle. I believe (emphasis added) that the V/Y and the BK/W (ground) are the wires you are looking for. And while the TPS is unplugged, turn the ign on and check for 5V at the R/W wire from the wiring harness. That is the reference voltage that 'feeds' the TPS. And turning the ign on with the TPS unplugged will trip a fault code on the CEL.

Jstfrfun - I have ECMspy, there is no test for the TPS that I could find. If you have a copy of the VDSTS software you would like to share, that would be great.

Jos51700 - All of that has been done.

Akbuell - Thanks

Ok guys here is what i checked
1.spark plugs ok
2.spark wires ok
3.fuel cell and pump ok
4.ignition coil
5.ecm spy test injectors ok
6.tps reset w/afv reset
7.swapped ecm out was ok
8.new fuel line and checked filer was ok
9.New spark plugs installed
10.battery ok

What i didn't check
1.air temp sensor
2.bank angle sensor
3.clutch switch sensor
4.kick stand switch
5.ignition switch

I cant believe he is not up and running yet i went out to help him but i have limited time and tools for this sort of thing

I wish i had this bike at my shop for a few days to find out what is up, I only went out for a couple of hours of diagnosis

Hey lazarus401
take the kick stand switch off and connect the wires so the bike thinks the stand is up, This is one less thing to check

If you need help see if you can leave it with me for a couple of days i will get it looked at and if i cant get it working i will help you out if it needs to go to the stealership
Just let me know!

P.s. Hows the job hunting going did you find work?

Laz, I wouldn't know how to send it. But I bought mine(at GREAT cost)from American Sport Bike, and had Al make me a cable for a lap-top I got from Wally's.

This is a must have tool for these bikes I'm surprised Russ dosen't have it for all the work he's done.

No Run
Spark, at the correct time
compression
Fuel in the correct amount

ECM spy will allow you to watch the throttle position!
it will tell you if the ecm is getting the CPS signal a 12 volt light tapped into the coil circuits can tell you that you are getting signals to the coils when cranking

( if the ECM out put is good but the CPS in is bad the coil test will pass), but no run IIRC all inputs can be checked and watched.

The ECM spy program is well written and comprenensive

there are several items that are read on line, the first 2 rows related to the TPS, except for the AFV, the diagnostics page shows a 0 / 5 for the cmp sensor output state.

Fuel and no / weak ignition, = flood
ignition and no fuel = dry plugs & Spark
a shot of fuel in the intake will cause short runs

No coms red switch on, ecm no power
start checking the interlock switches,

start at one of the big three and work backward
even with the efi these are easy to troubleshoot.
