Hey, I found a 2000 X1 red racing stripe model a few hours away from where I live in Tucson. It has under 10k miles and seems to be in really good condition. http://flagstaff.craigslist.org/mcy/976259337.html Aftermarket air intake, muffler, seat, cams and bars. I asked him about it and among other things he told me, he won a few trophies drag racing it in 2002 and 2003. He says he bought it new in 2001, and he and his mechanic friend have done all maintenance and work on it. The first and last bike (and buell) I bought was a lemon, so I don't want to get another one. I told him I'm not gonna buy it before he takes it to a certified dealer to get it checked out, is there anything else I should do or ask about? Any good guides I should be aware of? And what are the risks associated with a bike that has been raced? Thanks! -Nick |

I would check the clutch and the belt. I'm not sure he will take it to a certified dealer, you may have to do that on your dime. Looking at the bike it seems pretty clean. The exhaust is a Force pipe ($650 new). It is the loudest pipe you can get for a Buell. Because he is running that pipe and different cams chances are there have been mods done to the Fuel Injection tuning. You may want to ask about that. Also I noticed the seat is not stock, looks to be a corbin which is about $450 new. Finally the passenger peg mounts look to be home made, definately not stock. I would listen to it run, look at the oil, and if you can, do a quick compression check on the cylinders. A test drive would be best also if possible. $5,000 is high, but not outragous if the bike is strong and runs smooth. |

I am Robs friend Jeff we built it together. It has alot of nice parts. Ported heads, Andrew n6 cams, Crane adjustable push rods, race ECM, Force exhaust with baffle & Force intake, Corbin gunfighter&laddie, Crossroad bars, new updated rear shock. Me and Rob made the rear sets 2" up 2" back with passenger pegs. (Message edited by dblast on January 14, 2009) |

Jeff, why is Rob selling it after all that investment? By my calculations there's at least a couple grand in parts, much less the time and shop labor. |

Rob is a DPS officer with a family, and Rob does a lot of competition shooting. So my guess is he has not had any spare time to ride it. Knowing Rob there may be some trick gun in the future. |

Here are some pictures of my Force intake. I modified it so it would fit inside of the stock cover. I welded an extension on to it, so it would clear the inside of the cover. I installed IAT sensor, and ran the crankcase vent into it. I milled a block to mount the cover and made a bracket to support the bottom front. I like the cover on for the look and it keeps the rain off the filter. I made the same thing for Rob.

Why would you say your first Buell was a lemon? I would say make sure any bike you're considering doesn't ring any bells there. A dealer may or may not know or care enough to check out important things. Keep in mind a 99 or y2k will have several items that need to be updated, if they haven't already. Did they replace the oil pump drive gear with a bronze one when they did the cams? Does the engine leak or make any excessive noise? Does it have a stock transmission? Has it ever been laid down? Personally, in my opinion, the going rate for quality X1s these days is in the 4k range. Beaters go for less, cherry stock ones a little more. Special edition X1s tend to sell quicker, but not really for more money. Modified tubers tend to go for less than stock, low-mileage ones. Sad facts for sellers, it's the market. Racing of any kind is hard on a bike. Most Buell riders are more interested in track racing than drag racing. I think whoever buys this bike can and should call the shots, no disrespect intended to the owner or his friend. Just trying to be honest with the OP. |
