I will start reassembling my engine on my 99 S3 as soon as the heads get here tomorrow. The rear cylinder is fairly easy to get at, my question is the front. I've got the front of the engine on a floor jack. How much can I safely lower it to give me a little more room to get the heads on and torqued? Any cautions on the oft mentioned front isolator bolts? |

Yes you can lower the front of the engine some but there are things you must do beforehand. First you have to remove one mounting bolt for each of the "heim-links" they are located at the front, top, and rear of the engine. DO NOT TRY TO ADJUST THEM FOR ANY REASON! These heim-links provide the alignment of the rear wheel in relation to the frame and front steering geomerty. There is no procedure for adjusting these in the manual as it is factory only adjustment. Next, you will need to check any wiring to the top of the engine and either disconnect or remove any ties so there is room for the wires to flex as you lower the front. That's about it other than just lower it slowly while watching for wires catching/stretching and mechanical obstructions. BC Steve |
