Just thought I would forward on some pics of our winter project in hopes it will keep me motivated. Long story short, I'm a huge Buell fan, vintage fan, road race fan, XR750 fan. Combine the four, and you get Lucipher's Hammer I and II. I have had a love/hate relationship with a facotry twin carb Pro Thunder Buell I picked up years ago....we either won on it or it threw me on my head. It has been sitting in the corner of my shop rode hard and put away wet since the last particularly nasty get off (scavenge stage of oil pump seized, oiling rear tire). The bike itself has quite a bit of history actually. I bought it from Walt Sipp. Before that, it was Michael Barnes Pro Thunder Daytona winner and was one of the last twin carbs built. So it deserved a fate better than rusting in the corner of the shop... So anyways, my goal is to preserve the bike and pro thunder parts as much as possible for future restoration back to Pro Thunder trim, but in the mean time, we are going to build a Battle of the Twins Formula 2 bike out of it in tribute to Lucipher's Hammer(s). I even got permission from Mr. Buell to call it Lucipher's Hammer III. The goal is to have the bike done for Vintage days at Mid Ohio and race it in the Battle of the Twins race there. Will be a fairly large project, including de-stroking it to 1170cc, but it should be a lot of fun. Here are some pics of the bike early on in the race-toration process. First pic is the bike pretty much as it scraped up off of the track after it spit me off. Next pic is with the XB front end gone, replaced by the twin disc X1 front end and Marchinisi wheels. And finally with some very roughly mocked up XR750TT bodywork and a Hayabusa front fender. hopefully we will have some more progress shots after x-mas. WFO      | ||

Hey did Walt race that bike at Mid-Ohio ? I'm pretty sure it was there. he lent me some tire irons and let me use his compressor to fix a friends flat. Great guy. Always good to see another racing Buell back on the track. I'll be there Saturday/Sunday if you need any help. Good luck matt | ||

Can you expound on what a Pro Thunder bike is? Dual carbs? Any detail pics? Wish you luck w/the project. | ||

Combine the four, and you get Lucipher's Hammer...." that'd be myself, as well your project is SUPER most of us, myself included, know way too little about this initial pair of "H-D" 'factory' racers & the impact they had on the old BMC what's the LH timeline? how do Don Tilley & Erik & H-D inter-relate on these 2 bikes? who did what to create & develop them? is there a comprehensive writeup in print?  | ||

How timely... The original Lucifer's Hammer is currently being restored at Tilley's Harley-Davidson/Buell in Statesville, NC. As you can see from the amount of progress from the July pictures to these taken in November, my infrequent visits to Tilley's in Statesville should be capable of capturing a good portion of the restoration.       Didn't mean to hijack Wes's thread... 1313 | ||

Those are some cool pics. Allan Girdler's book on the XR-750 has some good LH info. Try to find that book now. | ||
