The air box on my 99 X1 is O/E. I have heard rumors of modifying for better flow and still keeping the side pods intact.

My wish is to keep my X1 looking stock but getting over 100hp,got cams, got exhaust, got ECM, but also got a rich condition...need more airflow

Talk to Buellistic. He could give you the details. Mine never came with a breadbox, so I wouldn't know.

Nitrous dry system would meet all requirements.

This is a pic of my Screaming Eagle hi-flow air cleaner and cover which is fabbed out of used parts. It also has an improvised puke tube and filter. KK

I'll try this again. The O/E airbox modification. I know how to install an aftermarket ham can or forcewinder, but if you DON'T want to rip all of the body off the bike, how is the airbox modified for better flow?

Umm, you have the race filter? Couldn't you fit a forcewinder under the box? Isn't there an elbow in the OE box the same size as a forcewinder?

Got any pics?

I've never dealt with OEM box before....

Okay, if you really must run that unsightly breadbox here's the el cheapo way to do it: just go to this website and follow the instructions. He claims it's good for a 6 HP gain. Why don't you do a before and after dyno test and tell us if it's true.

So, What those two sites and Al at American Sport Bike bring me to is to lopp off the existing snorkle tube and fit a KnN onto the end of it as the tube is just a sound canceling device.

So here goes, I'll post results.

IMHO the SNORKEL should be left the OEM length as it is tuned for your engine ...

I have a KnN filter on mine with the air box intact, it was like that when I bought it, but from what I can tell and understand the interior of the box has to be shaved down to fit the new filter and puke tube redirected, I will post pics tomorrow.

Sophmoric question here but wouldn't the snorkel length and subsequent tuning be to an all stock configuration? Once one parameter is changed wouldn't it all go out the window? I'm thinking of doing the change myself once I start putting it all back together. Thanks for that X1 files link KD.

This is what I did to mine before I bought the Buell cf race cleaner. I noticed a great increase with my butt dyno. The engine came alive...
I used a cutting wheel attachment on my dremmel to hog out the barrier highlighted in red...

Don't use the stock plastic tube make it out of metal. The plastic will warp and not seal at the throttle body.

Here is mine.

Well, I've got all I need to do this except time(gotta tear down my mutant and ship it back to Redneck...DON'T ASK), as soon as I get a minute I'll start the hacking on the internals of my airbox even though Al says I'm getting good power out of this motor already "more than my riding skills". He says I shouldn't look for more than 90hp.

Mmmmmm.

No Ramsey, they made a mess of the whole thing.Too many problems to list, it's a complete do-over. Right from the start a TOTAL mess. I'll put together a list later after it gets solved.

Raceautobody, that K&N filter has less surface area than the stock replacement K&N. Did you get any power increase??? I was thinking of an air scoop in front of the engine mount. To direct air into the airbox. What you guys think?

A ram-air effect is always good, but you must be at HIGH speed for this to work. There is not much use under 50mph.

Ram air is good. As stated above you must be at higher speeds for it to work. The other issue with it is that the aerodynamics must allow it. Remember the mid 90's Camaro SS's and Trans Am's. I was pretty into those for a while and read several places that it was actually all for show. Different people placed sensors or instruments of some sort inside the scoops and on the Camaro SS's there was NO airflow coming in, very little on the T/A's. The aerodynamics of the cars actually directed air over the scoops. I don't know what you have in mind for your "scoop" but it may be a lot of work for no actual "ram air" effect. Just a thought
