My buddy has an X1 2001 and the oil cap under the seat keeps blowing off and getting oil all over the tire. It has happened a few times now and is dangerous. Any ideas why. Could it be the seals. Not much on engine internals. |

Too much oil. Sounds like is keeps overfilling it. |

"i" check my oil with the bike on the side stand, engine running, and at operating temperature ... Why do "i" do it this way ??? "well", it is not a true wet sump like a car as the oil tank is above the bottom end of the engine ... |

Check for a pinched vent line as well. |

Its not a wet sump engine at all. I understand why you check it as you do. But, I don't get your explanation Buellistic. These are dry sump motors. |

[it is not a true wet sump like a car] If everyone looks in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL that everyone should have for their year/model on the fold out "INTERNAL ENGINE PASSAGES" ... The picture shows a CAVITY below the flywheels ... This CAVITY holds just enough oil to keep the oil off the bottom of the flywheels so your engine does not make air bubbles in the oil ... This cavity will over fill three different ways: when you turn your engine off, you put over 2 1/2 quarts of oil in your 2 1/2 quart oil system, and you have and older BUELL( 1997 or older) taking the engine up to the HIGHER REV. LIMITS, quickly backing off which allows this CAVITY to over fill ... The FIX for the backing off from the HIGH REV. LIMITS was corrected with the BUELL -98 or the H-D -91A oil pump ... Although "i" have not put the latest and greatest oil pump(-02B)in my 97S3T or 00 P3(BLAST) which is a better oil pump on both feed and return, the plan is to ... This is what the -02B does for the XB engine is it circulates the oil quicker to help cool the engine ... (Message edited by buellistic on October 06, 2008) |

When you check the oil while your bike is running you will see just how much oil is ACTUALLY in the system, weather it is on the side stand or not. If it is over full you WILL know it! |

Latest oil pump is a 26357-02A, noticeably deeper pump than the old one off my 1996 S-2.Put on last week. |

Is that to say the pick-up is lower in the bottom of the engine than the O/E? |

Pick up is not lower ... The feed gear is wider as is the return gear ... |

As far as I can tell his bike is actually low on oil. Still blows off. Oil seems to be foamy though. |

Are checking oil with bike running, or bike off? Please describe your oil level checking method... |

Per my '01 X-1 owners manual: Run the bike long enough to get the oil warm. With the bike upright on a level surface, remove the oil cap and wipe off the dipstick. Fully insert the cap, remove, and look at the oil level. Most folks here run w/the level at the middle of the 2 marks or below. The foam is normal. The scavenge side of the pump has a higher capacity than the feed side, so it tends to suck air and oil. FWIW, I made a T-shaped dipstick from flat aluminum stock, and painted it white, so I could see the oil level easier. |

You could always look at getting one of these. http://www.bankeperformance.com/buell/fillers.html |

"Most folks here run w/the level at the middle of the 2 marks or below. " Your owner's manual says that? Sweet! |

Sounds like a leak down test is in order. Joe |

I too have had this problem happen about 3-4 times. The Banke cap that Brinnutz has shown looks like the answer. My take on the problem is that the rubber under and part of the chrome cap becomes softer over time and just dosn't have the swell factor left to effectivly grip the lip of the plastic tank, and heres a thought? If you have the tank off run some rough grit emery cloth around radialy inside the lip, just enough to take the smooth away and give it score lines enough to grip, but care must be taken not to enlarge the oriface 'hole'. That might afford just enough additional grip, or go to Lowes or Home Depot or 'A' hardware store and get an apropriate sized rubber gromet afair and Gorilla glue it on the seat base, 'or rivit' to posativly stop the movement of the cap. Hold it by force, as it were. |

Sounds like a leak down test is in order +1 My bikes oil tanks develop a fairly strong vacuum while running, making it difficult to remove the cap. Sounds like a venting or ring blow-by problem if the cap is being blown out by air pressure, and not oil overflow. Mark |

I would try a new cap! There is one i have seen that has a temp gauge in the cap so you see your oil temp. Looks cool, But it says for xb only. Anyone know if they are interchangeable. |

The XB piece is not interchangeable, but the HD XL temp stick is. I've never seen one with bad rings pop the 'stick on a regular basis. It seems like that always rears it's head in the breather/airbox system, for me. |

Just a note, I just went thru a problem with my x-1 popped the oil cap, kept getting oil on the rear wheel, several other places. Turned out to be the motor seal at the center of the stator, had a crack. Open your primary cover, if it's too full of oil check the stator seal. the vent line sends oil up and then leaks down several places making finding the origin difficult. Hope this helps. |
