I'm putting a 98 S3 motor into my 96 S2 this week.
Aside from the motor, I'd also like to put on the S3's exhaust, wheels and a cast swing arm.
Does anyone know if I'll run into a problem with this swap? I'm not sure if the S2 will accept these parts.

I belive all of those should be a direct swap however you may need the s3's rear shock to go with that swing arm though i could be wrong.

I believe you're going to have clearance issues with the swingarm, and with the header. I don't believe they'll fit, without work. The engine should bolt right up, though.

It should all bolt up unless the 98 had the header that goes under frame vs over like the S-2. Swingarm will bolt up but unless you are lightweight and do not do 2 up the swingarm will hit rear frame bars when you hit a big bump.

The exhaust will be fine if it's a 98. '99 is when the exhaust started running under the frame and crossed. The stock swingarm mount can be shaved to accept the aluminum swingarm, of use the mount that came with it. I thought '99 was the first year of the cast swingarm though...

mother thing to note, if you use the aluminum swingarm you'll either have to use a Nissen rear caliper or build/find a special mount for the stock brembo IIRC.

I think I'll keep the box swing arm, thanks for you input.
Got the motor out and the frame all down to bare bits on the S3 - busy day.
Had to improvise a bit with cinder blocks for an engine stand and an 8x16 hex head and a bunch of nuts and washers for an isolator removal tool.

I was told that the brembo caliper would work with a cast swingarm.

So far, so good.
You do have to use the later (98 onwards) spacers with the later wheels yet use the earlier axles with the steel swing arm and WP S2 fork.

It's getting there, slow but sure.
Does anyone know if the VOES and voltage regulator changed between the 96 S2 and 98 S3?
I have lots of shop manuals but no parts manuals.

dunno, but I pulled the VR off my '03 sportster when the one on my S2 went bad. the plug was different so I spliced the old plug onto the new VR and it worked fine.
