I recently bought a 96 S1. It had a lowering brace installed for the shock mount that dropped the bike an extra inch or 2... I installed the factory brace.. but the back (Seat) still seems to sit alittle LOW... Is there ANY shock adjustments that will lift the bike up in the rear... ??? Can someone suggest WHAT I can do to get the back end HIGHER to have a more aggressive feel? Thanks, Matt (LEO SOUTH GA.) |

What shock is on it? The manual has a specification for rear end sag, unloaded versus driver-on-seat. Set it (using rear preload - what shock you have will determine how to adjust preload) per the manual and see how that does ya. I *want* to say my 98 S1W manual lists 3/4" sag, but that doesn't sound like enough in my head. If you need me to, I can go to the garage and check for ya, just LMK. More preload / higher tail equals faster steering response. More sag / lower tail equals slower turn-in. Congrats on an awesome bike - you're gonna love it (as if you didn't know that...)! |

There are 3 different front shock mounts, a lowering mount (from an M2 low or an aftermarket built one) which it sounds like you had; the original 96 S1 bracket; and the recall replacement bracket(which is made for the shorter late model shock). If you have the recall replacement but are not using it with a late model shock it will sit too low. Make sure the shock you have matches the bracket you have. It is best to have the shorter late model shock with the recall bracket since the later shock is better. |

I have an extra early style (longer) front shock mounting bracket if you need it, post some pictures of your setup we can identify the shock by visual inspection |

Here are the pics. MEASUREMENT... from mounting bolt to mounting bolt is right at 17 inches. Let me know what you all think in order to RAISE the rear up. Thanks, Matt (LEO SOUTH GA.)

I thought the 'long' shock measurement was 16.5", unloaded? That half an inch (wherever it's coming from) in eye-to-eye measurement could be where your seat lowness is coming from... Looking at the threads, your preload looks like it'd be waaay soft to me. How's the sag measurement, unloaded to loaded? |

According to the applicable rear shock recall bulletin,
The new front shock mount MUST be used with the new shock absorber. The new shock is 1.77 in. (45 mm) shorter than the previous shocks and requires the new front mount to align and install properly. It sounds like you have the old/recalled longer version shock and need the newer shorter one. |

My measurement was approximate.. its PROBABLY right at the 16.5 " Can somone give a measurement from say the BASE of the rear turn signal to the ground??? That whay I can get a height figure with NO weight on it.. The shock i believe is the SHOWA.. Is there a way to find out IF its NEEDING the NEWER recalled shock??? Will BUELL still WARRANTY the shock on it even though its a 96??? Thanks Matt. |

There is a X1 shock and mount on ebay for sale.. Measures about 14.75 eye to eye.. WOULD THAT FIT on the 96 S1.. It comes with the bracket as well. Thanks, Matt |

That's the one. Old/recalled shocks were roughly 16.5"; the new/replacement versions are 14.8" give or take. |

Mm, Give Paul @ Gainesville H-D/ Buell a call. If the recal was not done on your bike they MAY be able to help you out. |

From the way it sounds from other badwebers you are 'hit and miss' with HD and the recalls, they didnt do the shock for mine because it had the middle recall shock, the same one you have on yours, so it showed up that recall work was done (although it did show up that i needed the recalled fuel vent and they did take care of that free of charge!), i didnt press the issue, i just started looking for a good used one. It appears from your pictures that you have the correct front shock mounting bracket for that style shock so I dont think that is your problem. I just measured the distance from ground to the base of my right rear turn signal it appears to be 31.75 inches. could be your preload adjustment on the shock? Just in case you didnt know, the entire S1 manual is posted in PDF format in the knowledge vault section of bad web, preload adjustment is covered on page 2-39. Another reason why this website kicks ash! hope any of this helps you out |

The longer shock could still be the replacement one for the recalled WP shock, which is what was installed on my S1. Where is the S1 manual in the KV, I found 2 of them but could not get either one to open. Dean |

I talked to Paul at GAINESVILLE HD.. Seems that I HAVE the replacement shock... something else is going on... He advised me to back the nut off the spring and see if i get some more height out of it... so.. I will give it a try when i get home. Worst case.. He wants me to bring it down to him and he and his guys will look at it and get it RIGHT. Thats why i do my business with GAINESVILLE HD !!!!! Matt. |

dean, knowledge vault under manuals, then click on the main s1 manual link, you get a table of contents, click on the section you are looking for (or scroll down), then you get another table of contents with the chapter divided into sections, just click on any one of those sections and it'll take you right to it, pretty darn cool, even if I already have the paper copy! |

You have the early recall shock and would be better off with the later recall shock (which is shorter), but I am not sure that is your problem since it looks like you have the correct front mount for that particular shock. Nonethless, I would recommend changing the whole setup (newer style shock and front mount) if you can find one in your price range. I noticed my S1 sat higher after upgrading to the newer setup. Besides, if it is unusually low then I would still suspect the shock, although it does appear from the picture that you can add quite a bit more preload to the one you have. |

so what was your measurement from ground to the bottom of rear turn signal? |

Measurement from the turn signal base to the ground. = 29 inches Sooo i am ONLY off by about 2.5 inches... That COULD be in the rebound of the shock.. I will try and adjust the shock OUT this weekend and see where that puts me.... Matt. |
