Just bought my first Buell. a '99 M2. It was cold natured and backfired (popped) frequently at low speed and deacceleration. I was originally told that replacing the low speed jet would fix the problem. There is also a leak at the manifold/head connection....apparently the former owner did not take it in for the recalls. I don't like the CV carb that much (I've had a couple) I would like to put an S & S on it. Any pro or con out there? |

I have an S&S super E on my s1, its a pretty good carb. No complaints from me. There is a good website here on tuning them. http://www.bikernet.com/SandS/PageViewer.asp?PageI D=1198 |

If your intake seal or seals leak, putting in a richer jet is not the answer !!! The intake seals only last about 2 years because the engines are jetted so lean ... If these engines were liquid cooled it would be no problem ... |

...if these engines were liquid cooled, they wouldn't be the tubers we know and love I have run (and do run) rejetted, Thunderslide-d stock carbs on all my Buells with no issues whatsoever. Great throttle progression, no bad manners hot or cold (I ride all year long, 100* in the summer, 15* in the winter sometimes), and great power. If your heart it set on an S&S, there's no stopping you...but I never fix what ain't broke. Fix the intake leak first, get it running right with the parts you have so you have a baseline for what "right" feels like, *then* throw money and parts at it to your heart's content |

Forget the S&S, just rejet the CV carb. Start with a 45 pilot and a 190 main. You may want to shim the needle about .030 - .050, if it doesn't ping at partial throttle on accelleration, no need to shim. To get it dialed in perfect, do a couple of dyno pulls and check the A/F ratio. |

Thanks for your advice. A local Buell fanatic is helping me replace the intake gaskets, install a .046 low speed jet, drill out the little plug covering the low speed adjustment screw, clean the filter, check the torque on the motor mounts, straighten the bent brake pedal etc. If it does work well enough I will leave it alone as I am a practical man. |

You are definately on the right track. The stock main is probably a 200, a bit on the large side. You might need to back it down to a 190. The 45 pilot with 2 1/2 turns out is also a good starting point. My Cyclone likes about 2 3/4 turns, my S2 likes 3. Go figure. |
