Older Harley's/Buell do not have a positive stop on low or high gear (1st & 4th or 5th). It will still move like there is another gear, but will continue without any resistance if there isn't. On newer bikes the shifter will not move any further if in high or low gear. Is there a way to adopt that XB tranny trait and put it in/on a Tuber/Blast tranny? EZ |

Baker used to make shift drum that would do that, and they claimed better shifting, too. The XB parts will not work in yours. Blast/XB trans are similar. The Blast has little in common with Tube-frame stuff. |

LOL - Blast and 02 Tuber trannys are identical except for the trap door and the Blast is the reason it is still so easy to get spare parts for the tuber transmission to do a rebuild if nesc. - A tuber Baker drum kit will fit a Blast and so will the 6 speed - all the gears, bearing and forks will interchange as well. I just wish we had the trapdoor. EZ |

"the Blast is the reason it is still so easy to get spare parts for the tuber transmission" It wouldn't have anything to do with the millions of Sportsters running around with that transmission, would it? LOL (The Blast is a great bike, but the universe doesn't revolve around it) (Don't get touchy, I'm just making a point) Maybe the Blast stuff does work, I just shift and don't worry about it. If the Baker drum fits a Blast, and that gives you positive-stop, why worry about adapting XB stuff? |

Jos51700: This is the kind of "BUELLschitte" that is on the "THUMPer Forum" ... ie: If it were not for "BLAST's" it would be hard to get parts for the "TUBER TRANSMISSIONS", WELL WHAT ABOUT "SPORTSTER TRANSMISSIONS" ??? The ones that seem to be the "KNOW IT ALL"(ie: it is right because it is in the Factory Service Manual)are technician want-a-be's and would not make a pimple on a MECHANIC's "ARSE" !!! |

True you can order through the sportster number as well - I knew that, however, any updates to the Blast tranny works in your favor because the Sportsters no longer run that tranny - only the Blast. And Bullistic knows his Tubbers, but he blew up his Blast and so that eats him - and his lousy know it all attitude is why he doesn't post on the Thumper side any longer in any forum - he's in 4 I know of. Here's the answer http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/394623.html?1221415825 So can one adopt the newer XB drum to the Tuber transmission? Have anyone tried it here? EZ |

Personally knowing Buellistic, i would hardly call his attitude lousy. On a different note, the lack of a positive stop never really bothered me, its easy enough to know what gear your in... |

Me either - however, the folks used to newer style transmissions do notice and since I'm always trying to learn, I'm now curious to just how different the drums are and if they could be adapted - years from now some poor restorer will be wondering about this very thing because of a lack of parts - lol - maybe not - still a good question. On Buelistic - he doesn't bother me - reminds me of my dad - lol - however, he has driven other hapless souls nuts on this forum. I'm actually glad though that he is sharing his knowledge of Tubers though - my dad would have tapped the side of his nose and say - "He knows stuff!" - lol EZ |

Whoa, hosses. Maybe we could *all* calm down a touch?? I mean, if you have a contribution, contribute, and you have a contradiction, contradict, but if you have a conniption, go ride for awhile! |

The 1995 and 1996 S2's have a stop, not sure when the "no stop" thing started. Anyone know for sure? Was it when the changed the 3rd gear ratio? |

I know all Evo Sportsters up to '04 lacked the positive stop. I'm not sure why '95 and '96 S2's have it, as I know the '96 S1's (and my '98) do not. |

So 04 was probably the last year that the Sportster ran the Tuber style tranny. EZ |

No, '04 was the first year of the new PITA XL tranny. '03 was the end of the trapdoor road in HD products, and '02 was the end for the trapdoor in Buell stuff, until the XBRR. |

The BUELL racing department has XB cases with trap doors !!! If they were racing BLAST's there would be BLAST cases with trap doors ... |

Okay, I'll show my ignorance... Why do you even need a "positive stop"??? Do people not realize how many gears are in a bike? Do they think that if they keep hitting the shifter that eventually an extra gear will appear in the tranny? NONE of my bikes have positive stops in them... |

"NONE of my bikes have positive stops in them..." I hear ya. Some folks prefer it, I guess. |

Must be getting old - I know HD raced the Blast, they did not use the trap door, they split cases, they also lost a lot using old school tech and ignoring the new stuff out there - the privateers did ok though, however, the classes kept changing, basically ruling the Blast out to a lot of folks who couldn't afford to keep re-tearing down the motor to classify for a certain class - its like you needed more than one motor just because of gearing - lol - 515cc to 505cc to 501cc to 499cc then 450cc or the 650cc to the 600cc to 580cc to 550cc - I think I hit all the single classes - the Hondas on the track are awesome and durable, the Blast had to really fight to to show let alone the few wins - but it did occasionally happen - and it almost always needed working on after a set of races- EZ (Message edited by ezblast on September 20, 2008) |
