I just went through the same thing. Puddle of oil near the back of the shock, oil sprayed on belt, tire , and hugger. It was the output shaft (Front Pulley Shaft) seal. Pinched by H.D. tech while putting it back together. You don't get the leak by just running the engine, you need to ride it and turn the shaft. Look underneath the engine and you should see the case looking wet towards the back on the right side..I also had the underside of the oil lines to the tank drip a little as they touch the engine case allowing the oil to run down the oil lines.Just a guess, but it sounds just like my leak. |

"Just be aware that: A: '70's Sportster technology is way different than evo sportster technology. B: '70's Sportsters are messed up if they DON'T leak." Yeah probably as different as a 2005 Kawasaki ZX10R is to a 2008 one ;P Just teasing |

Sorry Grovskopa I have no idea how difficult it is to replace or how much time is involved. My bike was in for a clutch housing replacement under warranty at the dealership. I'm sure there are plenty on here with very good knowledge of this repair who would be willing to help you out. I hope everything goes well! p.s. Be careful and watch out for the oil on the rear tire! |

So, this leak is around the rear of the Timing cover? I'm pretty sure mine's doing the same damn thing. |

"Yeah probably as different as a 2005 Kawasaki ZX10R is to a 2008 one ;P " Well, maybe The Ironhead XL had iron cylinders and heads (duh), and the bottom of the cylinder bolted to the case, and the head bolted to the top of the cylinder. The Evo/Buell motor runs studs all the way up, and the aluminum cylinder is just sandwiched under the aluminum head. The transmissions are 100% different. Points vs electronic ignition. Mechanical valve clearance vs. hydraulic. Actual oil pressure vs what amounts to a splash system. I wish you were stateside. I could get your bike straightened out. |

"So, this leak is around the rear of the Timing cover? " The timing cam gear seal is easy to replace, just don't damage the seal bore. Remove timing cover, mark and remove timing plate, pull timing cup bolt, and replace seal. Then, turn back the clock! |

I think it is fixed now! There is a conic connection going from oil pump to oil filter, there was a small leak now that I fixed. Still not sure if that was it though since I have not been riding on it after fixing |

I would make sure and ride the dang thing. There is nothing worse than finding out later that its not fixed! |

It's dry now wahey!!!!!!!!!!! But of course there is a new problem already, some strange squeaky sound coming from rear cylinder (or about that area). Sounds kinda like rubber rubbing against rubber |
