Having issues shifting out of 2nd to third, feels like it is gonna break my dang foot when I actually get it to shift. I looked at the archives; is that baker shift kit my best bet? Or any recommendations would be great. Thanks yall-
Will

Did you adjust your clutch?

If you ever get curious, you can inspect the transmission pretty easily. When I installed the Baker kit, I also replaced two gears in my transmission (the ones with the engagement dogs for the 1st to 2nd shift). It made a noticeable improvement with my particular problem... eliminated it, actually. I was overjoyed. It made me feel like I was in control of my own destiny...

... heh.

TOO TIGHT on the primary chain can cause this !!!

Adjust to 3/4 inch on the tight spot ...

The way to tell that your primary chain IS or HAS BEEN adjusted TOO TIGHT is by how deep the chain has worn into the plastic on the chain adjuster shoe ...

From Appleton HD, a board sponsor. They were cheap... less than $100 for both of them. They were also remarkably easy to replace.

Transmission work is easy on a tuber and well within the grasp of a mere mortal with tools.

Cool, thanks bro. I was looking on the American Sportsbike website for them, but coming up dry, and haven't found any dealerships around me in western PA that have any kind of stock available.

I would imagine any of the dealers that sponsor the board could have them at your doorstep in less than 5 days even if they don't have them in stock.

You'll enjoy messing around with the trapdoor transmission. It's one of the cool things about Sportster/Buell engines I didn't know until I got one. I will never be able to fathom why the factory did away with it on the rubber mounted Sporties and XB's.

I also upgraded to a Baker Smooth Shift drum (not really necessary, but nice to have simply for the more secure detent plate) and replaced the shift forks (probably unecessary as well, they weren't bent, but I couldn't tell for sure until I could compare them with new ones. They were remarkably cheap as well... less than $100 for all three of them).

I figure that I will do all this stuff soon's winter hits hard up here and I am confined to the garage for several months. On a more immediate note, though, my clutch is sticking at times, not wanting to depress. I fiddle with it frantically for a few seconds, and wala, it works. Any ideas? It is kind of disturbing me... Got new clutch cable, it is tightened correctly, can't figure out what is wrong.

As close as I'v come to less than perfect shifting is when the clutch cable is not spot on..... finding neutral at a stop is difficult or non existent, but its a cable adjustment in my case.
