I originally posted this over in the XLforum about a month ago, and was directed here, so here it goes. POSTED - Just wanted to say thanks in advance for any help from you guys. About 2 months ago I picked up my first Buell. An '01 X1 w/ 2800 original miles on it. I love this bike and it has been great, until last week. I rode it pretty good on Thursday, then went to go for a ride on Friday. I waited for the FI light to go out, and hit the button. Normally within a crank or 2, it is purring like a kitten, but it didnt catch this time. So I hit the button again, nothing. And again. nothing. I now I shouldnt have tried to throttle it, at this point but was supposed to be meeting some friends for a ride. So i kept trying to start it. Using the throttle, at this point. Then i tried to push it down my driveway. Nothing. I guess I must have flooded the engine, but you would think after a couple hours it would start. But no. If i crack it for 5 to 10 seconds it catches once then dies. I am new to the whole Fuel Injection thing, so I dont know where to begin. I removed the side covers, checked the plugs, they were a little dirty so I cleaned them, and put them back in. Still nothing. At this point I am wondering if I could have blown one of the all important sensors that are needed for this system to work. But again, I dont know where to begin. Any help on where to start would be great. Thanks. Dave NEW POST HERE - I was wondering if there is anyone in the SLC area that has a cable and is familiar with using ECMSpy. I have had to put 3 cars in the shop in the last month, and that doesnt include my sons Sidekick that got rolled. Any help would be great. I know it is the fuel system, its just not getting any. Plenty of spark, just no fuel. I live in Stansbury Park, off Hwy exit 99 towards Tooele. I would be willing to compensate for time. Thanks. Dave 435.850.9863 |

First: Do you have fuel in the tank? Don't ask how I know to ask that question. Been there, done that. Turn the key off, and turn the stop/run switch to off. Turn the key on, then put the stop/run switch to run. You should hear the fuel pump run, for 2-3 sec. My SM says: 1. If no pump response, no ECM power. There are relays and grounds to check. 2. If short pump response, check bank angle sensor. Which leads to some other thoughts. A factory service manual is worth every penny. And check other 'safety' interlocks, especially the sidestand switch. If the pump works, before doing anything else, unplug the sidestand switch and jumper the pins. Then try and start the bike. This may be the cure. Hope this helps, Dave |

Well if you flooded it then your getting fuel. If you've got spark then you've got 2 out of 3. Check compression. If all of these are good then you have the basics, now you need to check codes, there are plenty of threads to explain this procedure. Be sure to start with the basics, then go on to VDSTS or ECMSpy(which you should have anyway)in cooperation with the manual. |

The gas tank is full. I filled it on my way home the day before this happened. I am not sure I actually flooded it, if it was carburated, once the fuel evaporated it should have started. Unless it isnt getting fuel. When I turn on the ignition, I can hear the fuel pump pressurizing the system. So i dont think its that. Also tried to start it with the kickstand both up and down, and nothing either way, so I dont believe it to be the side stand switch. Havent jumpered the pins yet, as I just havent had much time to learn about how this is done. I know it has spark, and no fuel, as I did give it a shot of starting fluid while trying to start it, and it ran for a couple seconds until the fuel was gone. I am hoping that just reseting the TPS will cure the problem, as I have read that this works with a number of issues that Buells have. Since there are 5 sensors that make up the fuel injection system. I am just not familiar with this software and how it works, and dont want to mess my bike up any more than it is now. I sold my M2 to a friend, and bought my X1. Now I am wondering if it was the right thing to do. That M2 runs like a raped ape, and I knew how to work on it. Thanks Again. |

Sounds similar to the symptoms I had with a bad fuel pump earlier this year. I could still hear the pump running but apparently it wasn't supplying enough pressure to start the engine. At that point I was still taking mine to the dealer, so I can't help you with repair procedures. A service manual will help a lot. |

I have ecm spy and live in slc. but i am new to this software so i wont be much help yet. I used it last night to do a tps reset and do some diagnostics but not sure i did it right as i get a stumble at about 3700 rpms i think the fuel enrichment for start up is to high on mine and it essentially running rich at 161 % should be at 100 but i did tps reset when bike was cold so i got bugs to figure out still! |

Laz: You are calling no fuel I agree based on the starting fluid, before going to the dealer, If you have either ecm spy or vsds check the injectors and then if you can borrow a gauge check fuel pressure, the only sensors it will not run with out are Bank angle, and Cam Position |

Prey as long as you dont write to the prom I dont see what you can hurt, the TPS Zeroing procedure is pretty straight forward, it may not idle well but that is an easy adjustment. the basic idea is back out the idle stop screw all of the way so that the throttle plate closes completely ( zero position ) then use the software to reset the position in the ecm memory. this calibrates the position VS signal for the ECM. you then must warm the engine to OT and re-adjust the idle stop if the engine is cold you cant get an accurate adjustment and the idle will be off. |

I bought a new head temp sensor and was going to install it because the code off the dash light indicated it, When i finally got ecmspy to work for me i could see it was a historic code and not an immediate prob. so I FEEL LIKE A MORON BUT ALL I HAD TO DO IS CLICK RIGHT TAB TO CONNECT TO BIKE! Once i did that smooth sailing, The bike runs better than ever. But i was wondering if anyone here knows if there is some kind of pressure relief for fuel pump, Because i heard a weird sound after i tested fuel pump, I had pulled clutch lever and fuel pump again pressured up and i heard this sound like a pop and the sound a balloon make when you stretch it as air goes out you make it squeak. Kinda startled me. I checked all fuel lines and all is ok |

The regulator is internal, the pop may have been any thing I usualy hear a groan after removal of the tank there is a schrader valve on the outlet for connetcion of a pressure gauge if it runs OK I would not worry about it if not I think that a pump may be required. BTW the CHT sensor that you bought you will replace it so dont sweat it, gat a cheapo 1/2" socket and slot it for the wire and its a thirty minute job. 5 for the sensor the rest for the tank. |

Hey old dog just put in a new rear head temp sensor as advised by al at sportbike.com bike ran great but after a real heat up got a mild hiccup now i wonder if i have a multi problem not sure just yet. will do a final test tomorrow. I reset tps like al said and afv. no trouble codes. Next ill try intake seals as i have just found out i am the 4th owner of the bike!!! I REALLY HATE NEGLECT OF SERVICE TO MOTORCYCLES MAJOR B.S. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!@#$ HEY THANKS OLD DOG, AL LIGTON at WWW.AMERICANSPORTBIKE.COM (Message edited by preybird1 on September 11, 2008) (Message edited by preybird1 on September 11, 2008) |

Lazarus I have ecm spy and an 01 x1w and i had same problems you did and i did a lot of diagnosis in this area. Also i have a spare ecm and fuel cell hell ill even pull off my tank and see if that will solve problem as i hooked ecm spy to the ecm and didnt get a fuel pump code but i didnt have time to test filter or fuel regulator i just swapped to my other fuel cell that is known to be in good working order! If you havent fixed this problem let me know i may be able to help. I live in salt lake by the u of u! I got tomorrow off 9-25-08 update here I also have ecm cable but no laptop. And i have the factory repair manual as well and i have taken this bike apart like 6 times in a month so i know this area well! (Message edited by preybird1 on September 24, 2008) |
