A couple of days ago I changed my Clutch cable and adjusted my clutch to Service Manual specifications. My first real test ride was to work yesterday and while the clutch operated flawlessly whenever I pulled the clutch lever it sounded as if there were birds singing in my primary. I sounds like a whistle or a high pitched squeel! I took off derby cover and checked fluid level clutch adjustment and all look good. Any ideas what is causing the kind of noise??? |

a "whining" out of your primary is usually a overly tightened primary chain. Loosen it up just a bit and see if it makes the sound. |

I checked primary chain tension and it is right where it is suppposed to be. I re- checked fluid and made sure ramp assembly was placed correctly in it's home. The sound only happens when I pull in the clutch. I may just have to bite the bullet and give it to a stealership?? I like doing my own work but at this point I'm not really sure what to do next. |

Jramsey: I'm not having any luck finding Throw out bearing in Service manual? Is that a sealed bearing?? How would I check for wear once I do find it?? |

I checked primary chain tension and it is right where it is suppposed to be. I'm not saying it is or isn't creating the noise, but the Service Manual has you tightening the primary too much. Do a search in the KV for the "Badweb" approved method! (Message edited by scott_in_nh on September 08, 2008) |

It is too tight. Let the bike idle to warm the engine but don't ride to warm the primary chain. Then loosen it slowly like 1/16 or 1/8th turns until the birds in your motor die. |

Check the oil level and adjust the primary chain to 3/4 inch on the tight spot(forget what it says in the Factory Service Manual) ... |

Mick the release bearing is attached to the adjustment screw. Remove the derby cover, spring, lockplate, wellnut, and the ramp assy. You will be able to see the release bearing ,wiggle the adjustment screw to check for excess play in the bearing. |

Last night I Re-checked Primary Chain and once again it was set correctly. I initally set it loose to begin with but I thought I would check again and it was right at 3/4. I was going to check bearing out but my wife decided Dinner was more important( what does she know??) I am going to check it out this evening and I will let you know all how it turns out! |

I'm having a similar problem with my 99 Cyclone. My clutch lost adjustment, I adjusted everything per the service manual, within 50 miles my clutch would barely release. Lots of freeplay at lever again. I replaced the cable and the same thing happened again, now when I let out the clutch I hear a squealing sound from the primary. Getting ready to take it apart. Any ideas on what to look for? Jerry |

Buellmeister57: To me that is what the SPRING PLATE(alao known as the "THE INFAMOUS GRENADE PLATE) PN 37977-90 gone bad ... It is good for about 50K miles or less ... The "PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT" for the clutch is to replace it with 2ea. STEEL PLATES PN 37913-90 and 1ea. FRICTION PLATE PN 37911-90 ... Then you basically have a RACING CLUTCH and "i" now have over 100K miles since "i" did my clutch ... |

If you do the race clutch conversion then buy a complete new set of plates and disks. Otherwise you'll have squeaky mice in the primary when go from a stop. |

The CLUTCH is so good after the "PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT" you have to relearn how to use the clutch ... "AND" it is a lot cheaper($$$.$$) !!! |

Thanks for info, new Barnett assembly on the way from American Sport Bike. My factory clutch has lasted 39,000 abusive miles. This one should do much better. |
