Ok, after perusing through the searches...I came across these seals, supposedly better than stock : http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Prod uct.jsp?skuId=&store=Main&catId=&productId=pH26258 &leafCatId=&mmyId= I want to try them, as I just replaced my seals not 2 weeks ago and I'm pretty sure it's leaking again...WTF! I didn't do the vaseline/silicone trick, so if that's how I'm supposed to do it, please let me know exactly how. I don't want to do this again. Thanks! Wilson | ||

I did mine dry. I've found that you can reach inside the manifold and feel to make sure it's lined up over the head intake. Move the manifold around a bit until both sides are lined up with the head, then tighten down. I caused the leaking seals on my Sporty by not paying enough attention to this alignment. Barry | ||

Having done this job on hundreds of bikes (probably more like in the thousands), and having never had to do the same bike twice, I install mine BONE DRY. I torque the manifold flange fastener's evenly, usually 1 turn at a time, and I set the manifold parallel to the cam nose with an inclinometer (if a backing plate isn't handy) before the last 3 or 4 turns of the manifold mounting bolts. I dunno if the James gaskets are better. I always used HD gaskets, and they work fine for me. I'm now curious; How many badwebber's that complain constantly of intake seal issues, have installed forcewinders or similar aftermarket intake filters, without the (required) mounting bracket? | ||

Which bracket? The one that goes around the breather bolts? I did, for a couple weeks (last year before I really started turning wrenches), until someone pointed it out. I didn't know! LOL | ||

I usually dip my thumb and forefinger in some motor oil or WD-40 and give the gaskets a schmear, just enough to make them slick, not dripping. In my mind that keeps the gasket from grabbing and getting pinched by the head / intake as I'm torquing (by the book, without putting too much stress on any single bolt thru the process). Haven't had to re-do any of 'em yet... | ||
