I was taking the long way home friday and the cap refused to come out of the filler ring, I messed with it and eventualy it did today I snugged the bolts that helped a little so does the "Halomar" go south after while allowing the bolts to get loose or the inner ring to misalign the filler neck to the point that it binds on the caps inner catch (black plastic part) | ||

My cap was getting stuck also but thought the black plastic in the cap may be swelling over time. I used my dremel to take an ever so slight amount off the lip that locks to the ring and no problems since. (Message edited by buellfighter on August 17, 2008) | ||

Yep. It actually caused me to eventually screw the gas cap up. Leading to a new one. Chase | ||

yeah, shave a little off the outside (curved) perimeter of the black plastic on the bottom of the cap till it slides in and out perfectly, worked for me | ||

Buellfighter pin pointed the BLACK PLASTIC ... Buellfighter found the QUICK FIX ... Had this happen many, many miles(& yrs.) ago to my gas cap ... | ||

i took off the locking mechanism and now have two strips of electrical tape holding it in place.... but then again im not running very far and its not on public roads etc etc | ||

When you turn the release it is supposed to turn the whole plastic piece under the fuel cap. Unfortunately the plastic piece over time can wallow out (it no longer stays in line with flip release on the top of the cap). JB Weld it. | ||

I should have thought of that, I will check that at lunch you should be able to feel the slop in the mateup of the parts if the pin to lock is wallowed out. | ||

I disassemble it annually, thoroughly clean (it's amazing what kind of dust and grid gets in there), inspect and spray the moving components with WD-40. No problems. | ||

Has this ever happened with the original Made in England cap? I've only seen it on the later Made Elsewhere cap. I'm not certain where the Elsewhere cap was made (possibly Taiwan) so I don't want to spread any incorrect info. 1313  | ||

I bought one from the local HD dealer about a year ago for 50 bucks. The barrel is not custom cut, any barrel key works in these caps. | ||

I read somewhere - and it seems to be true with my experience - that this problem usually happens when the fuel remains at a low level for a few days time. For some reason when the fuel never splashes onto the rubber seal at the bottom of the cap, the seal expands and sticks even when the release mechanism is working properly. | ||

I split the rubber collar a while back because it made insertion and extraction ( rotation of the lock difficult ) this appears to be interfierence(sp) between the catch inside the tank and the slot that the cap fits in the black rotating part appears to be tight and turning 90 degrees the fit seems to have suddenly gotten tight between the slot and the cap. | ||

Well a squirt of tri-flow on the moving parts made things work much better, no sanding, grinding, disassembly... was required. Prolly been a few years since I gave it any attention at all  |
