Can someone give me some insight.I'm rebuilding the front forks on my 97 s-1. when i took them apart i noticed there was a washer missing. The one between the cap and the cartrige.I went to the Harley dealer and they show it in there parts book but do not sell it.Is this washer necessary or is it just in the service manual and parts book as a generic part for other buells. And if not does any one know the size it should be.To me it looks like it would act as a stop for the cap. Thanks |

Try calling BUELL Customer Service as they may be able to help ??? Usually the Dealers with the BUELL sign on their building are not much help, only to tell you it(the part)is not available any more ... A good parts technician person can do a Dealer parts search if they know how ??? A smart move is to get the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL and PARTS BOOK for your year and model to have the PART NUMBER in hand when a part is needed ... |

I have the manuals here for the forks. If you don't get any info drop me a note and I can check with the suspension engineering group. Please consult pages 46 and 47 of the manual first. The 1997 S-1 Service Manual is also available as an Authorized Buell .pdf version. (The only one ever) (Message edited by court on July 31, 2008) |

One of the R&D techs is the suspension guru. If you get hung up and need a question answered send it to me. WARNING: He is frequently out of the country testing and they will be leaving soon (Sept) so it may take a bit of time. |

I think it was item 4 on the assembly drawing in the manual. Looks like a washer of some sort. Not sure what page since the manual was in Mutts garage last night. Hopefully he will respond today but he is not very computer savvy so forgive him. Lol |

Boyz thanks for the help.Frank the exploded view you sent is like the dealer has it shows the washer but does not give a item number or a part number. The repair manuel i have shows it as item number 4.Our pictures are the same and it would be the third item down from the top in the drawing you sent. Can't seem to open the PDF file.Like snowscum i have a little trouble with this computer S***.He'll help out tomorrow. |

3rd down from the top is a rubber washer which sits in the middle of the retaining ring, I think. I am not sure how interchangeable the parts are but I have part number 45869-94y for my 96 S2. You could always order it and compare it to the other as long as it is a cheap part which it should be. Frank |

I am surprised those parts do not have a part number in the catalog. I wonder why that is.... Maybe all the parts are sold in some type of rebuild kit or maybe they don't fail. I really don't know. I find that if I have a part number I can go to my local Buell dealership and usually order the part with no hassle. What dealership are you using? There is a fellow BadWebber that is a parts guy at High Country HD. I will shot him an email and see what he says... Frank |

Question: I have the same basic forks in my 98 S3 and have tried to replace the fork springs but am having a problem getting the springs out because there are two "C" shaped clips holding the springs in. When I remove the fork cap and press on the spring to relieve its pressure, what is the trick to remove the two "C" shaped clips? The clip's inner edge fits in a groove on the damper assembly and the outer edge fits in a groove on the fork tube. I can move the clips around but not enough to clear their outer edge from the groove that holds them in place. |

compress the spring by hand or take some safety wire and wrap 3 coils worth and twist to compress the spring. if you twist to much the safety wire work hardens and breaks. i usually undo the cap nut, push the outer tube down to the inner tube exposing the spring and then use one hand to push the spring down and the other to pull the retainer washers at the top. easier to remove than install. pay attention to the washer cone orientation or you will get to do it again. i do this with the fork tube out of the triple. good luck. tim |
