hey guys i have an 01 m2 that the rocker cover gaskets are leaking. i called a hd dealer 30 miles from here ( the closest) and he didnt exacltly sweep me off my feet as to the correct parts i need. what im wondering is what do the a and c ( and any other letters there may be ) after the part number stand for? thinking about seeing what i can find on ebay. are there any aftermarket manufacturers that have an advantage?? just looking for some insight. | ||

You want the one piece Gasket,rockercover/cylinder head part number 16800-84A ... You will need two(2) ... If the soft gaskets are good you can put them in the freezer for two hours and reuse them ... These are regular HARLEY-DAVIDSON part numbered gaskets ... Some times when you go into a HARLEY-DAVIDSON Dealer even with a BUELL sign on the building their parts technicians will go BRAIN DEAD if you say BUELL ... Go to www.americansportbike.com as they advertise on BwB'ers ... They will give you a discount, tell Al that LaFayette referred you ... (Message edited by buellistic on August 05, 2008) | ||

thanks buellistic, but what do the letters mean after the hd stock number as far as the top end kit? think id like to oder the kit and keep what i dont use as spares on hand. | ||

The BASIC Part Number GASKET,rocker box "16800", "-84" first year basic part used, and the high case letter "A" first component up-date ... If you want the GASKET KIT,ROCKER COVERS it will be "17036-91"?" ... The last time "i" bought a KIT was before the 16800-84A came out which will cause the KIT to have a later up-date "LETTER" ... BUELL Motor Company has been changing to what "i" call the "BUELLschitte" Part Numbering System, which makes it hard to figure out what retro-fits from HARLEY-DAVIDSON Plate Forms, mainly SPORTSTER ... ie:BRAKE PAD SET,rear PN 42385-98Y("Y" indicating early BUELL Part Number) which is the same as "BUELLschitte" PN H0301.T (Message edited by buellistic on August 06, 2008) | ||

Ok let me explain it to you with out all the quotations and random capital letters. The letter at the end of a part number denotes two things. If it ends in a Y (##-####Y) it is Buell specific If it ends in a letter like A, B, C then that is the first, third version IE ##-####C If it ends in a Y and a letter then it is Buell specific and that number version. Buell also has a part number system that was the original system they used before adopting H-Ds part numbering system I do not have an example but it will contain letters numbers and periods no dashes similare to this 854a.54.43b Any H-D dealer should be able to get you a Rocker Box kit, just ask and make sure the rocker box to cylinder head gasket is metal. And do not reuse any of the rubber ones, you are already in there go ahead and replace them... | ||

thanks buellistic for the explination and spidey for the translation. as long as its the newer style metal gasket and is for a 1200 sportster motor then i should be good eh? also what works best for tightening the banjo bolt nut on the crank breather setup? i bent a 3/4 wrench last night that got the front one tight but that back ones a biotch. i was thinking of bending it more and grinding away some of the back side of the wrench to get a lil more room for the wrench head to get in there. | ||

Spiderman: The BUELL "ORIGINAL PARTS NUMBERING SYSTEM" was worser than than the "BUELLschitte" System they are using currently, maybe that is why they up-graded !!! |
