Hey, just looking for some advice on my 00 X1 that has developed an oil leak on the rear cylinder. The leak seems to be between the lower rocker cover and the cylinder head...where the brushed aluminium rocker meets the black cylinder head. Any advice on what parts to get to fix. I assume u should replace the 5 gaskets listed in my service manual? I do not have a online pic but it has a breakdown on page 3-12, figure 3-6 gaskets 6, 7, 8,16, 17. Tx Brad. | ||

yes it is a "right of passage" you want a kit do both heads while you are in there. | ||

Just did mine. Word of advice, torque it by the book and don't get in a hurry. I have to do mine again because I got in a hurry.  | ||

I just did my rear head rocker gaskets on the S3. I am one of those that says if it aint broke don't fix it, so I will do the front if and when it does. I have almost 19,000 miles on the S1, and they are still holding. | ||

Thanks for the help...spoke to Al at American Sport Bike and parts on the way. Think I'll do both and take my time by the book with a case of beverages. | ||

Don't know how long you've had the bike or how many miles it has on it but when I bought mine new the rocker boxes started to leak every 3500 miles like clockwork. After several sets of paper gaskets I went with the Cometic (before Harley/Buell changed theirs) and they've been good ever since. Now that I think about it maybe I should have let the top leak and it might have released the pressure and not blown out the base gasket on the rear cylinder, oh well just another winter project. Brad make sure you get metal one's that's the new style from harley davidson and if you can do both heads while your at it. | ||

Hey I've installed the gaskets by the book and not rushed, meaning when torqueing down the rocker I did it by 1/4 turns and finished with my tourque wrench. Re-assembled the upper rockers and other bike parts...add fresh gas and start...holy crap does it run ruff!! And loud clickity clack from the valves?? It seemed to quiet down after the oil got moving and warmed up..is this normal? I sure as hell hope the push rods are not bend as I can't see how it would have happened.... both valves were closed upon dismanteling and cylinder was TDC. Everything was snugged down to spec as per the service manual. IDEAS? | ||

Common occurrence when pressure is taken off of the pushrods. The lifters have "bled down", meaning LOTS of clearance. After the engine runs for a while, the oil pressure in the lifters pumps back up, and valve clearance returns to normal. Mine did the same thing when I replaced my oil pump drive gear, and it took a couple of laps around the block (very gentle laps) for all to be well again. Does make a racket till it clears up. | ||

Thanks, I did a lap around the park, about 5 minutes and the excessive noise went away. Guess I'll know for next time. Tx for the help. | ||

Contributors... Thanks so much for this subject, which I had been following with passive interest. I have a '99 S3 which now has 12k mi. and was getting ready for another trip... Well this afternoon my rear cylinder decided to start bathing itself in oil. Could actually see the original gasket trying to escape. Got the new H-D gaskets and the rear is done, tomorrow for the front. The new metal gaskets are a wonderful improvement. Aren't these tubers really sweet, nimble, responsive and satisfying motorcycles?  |
