Went to an event in Johnstown, PA late in June called "Thunder in the Valley" with my 99 M2 and not suprisingly, I saw no other tubers but did see 2 XBs. Mine got lots of looks because of the exhaust system. I put a piece of straight pipe in place of the muffler with a couple of baffles in it and wrapped the whole system with heat wrap. Makes people do a double take when I go past cause they see a sport bike but hear a very loud Harley. Makes me laugh. Sorry to digress but it's amusing anyway. |

I know how ya feel. I've seen only 3 other Buells here in Amarillo in the last 2 years, two X1s and one Ulysses. My S2 stands unique in town. The other night about 40 sport bikes were parked at a local convenience store and I pulled up. Their jaws all dropped when They saw my bike cuz they had never seen or heard a Buell. |

I removed the stock muffler and front bracket and took it to a local muffler shop. I had them take about 2 feet of straight pipe and bend one end to match the inlet pipe curve on the muffler. Then they bent a shorter piece and expand the inlet end to fit over the end of the long piece to make a tail pipe. Took it all home, installed the front pipe, cut off the tail piece to make a slash cut outward to the left side and hung it at the rear joint with a heavy duty automotive rubber exhaust hanger. Clamped the joints with stainless bands. Also had a pair of baffles from a set of Sportster drag pipes that I bolted together side by side and then squeezed them enough to fit in the end of the straight piece before installing the tail piece. That was in case the local law enforcement decided to put a stick up in there to check for baffling. Cost me about $15 for everything. Will post a pic if you would like but not everything shows up real well cause I have the whole system wrapped with heat wrap. Looks like a real rat bike. It was all really easy to do. If you consider doing something like this, make sure you fatten up carb jetting because there is very little back pressure, and it will be very, very, very loud. It gets looks especially from metric sport bikers. I have had them follow me to stops to ask what the bike is. |

That is an irresponsible and inconsiderate modification and I want one just like it. |

As I said, you too can be as irresponsible and inconsiderate as me with very little effort and expense. Just can't see spending the big bucks on a full blown muffler as I view them as grossly overpriced and I am inherently a cheap bastard. I am kicking around looking into short, small diameter automotive application mufflers as well. Probably will end up painting the wrap with a flat black but the brown may just be rattier |

Dillweed: J.C.Whitney has a 18 inch reverse cone megaphone muffler that you can adapt to your BUELL ... "i" improvised one for my 97 S3T early on in its life and it worked quite(but not in db noise level which you will like)well ... If you tune correctly for it you will be surprised as it will be even lighter then the BIG $$$.$$ so called mufflers ... If you want a picture of it, e-mail me ... Ljenne73c@verizon.net |

Just look at the Force pipes. They are just tuned headers with empty "Megs" muffler cones at the end. |

I've always wondered what a universal glasspack like a borla, cherry bomb, thrush, etc would sound like on a Buell Anyone tried something similar? |

I have looked at some of the glasspacks and the concern with them is the overall length, not so much with their diameter. I'm sure they would be a bit quieter at least and not terribly expensive. As I mentioned before, I cannot justify paying for what I perceive as an overpriced "properly designed system." My priorities would be cheap over expensive and function over form, clearly evidenced by the ratty look I have now. |

There are two ways to "CORRECTLY" jet your carburetor ... If you have a lot of money use a DYNO ... If you are "CHEAP" like me, a REAL WORLD Fuel/Air gauge the you can use over and over again ... |

The previous owner had the carb modified and rejetted and I know the tech who did it and he said it was pig rich. Still manages to get 50 MPG. I explained to him what I had in mind and he said there should be no problem and there has not been. Plug readings are fine. Remember that I do have some baffling in mine to provide some restriction. I noticed no flat spots in the power curve and overall it seems to be a bit quicker than before but that may be psychological wishful thinking. Never been dynoed. Someday I will pull the carb to see what was done. |
