Hey all, I am new to this site. I just found it, And well, An unfortunate circumstance has risen to make me find you all.
My Husband has a 1996 S2-T Buell. It went down last week. Thankfully he was in front of the house and wasn't going fast... wet roads. Anyway, The damage wasn't TOO bad. Needs a front fairing, signal light, and mirror on the front. The shop says that we would go off the RED book value with Insurance. The Insurance Company wants to total it out. They are saying it is worthless than $2300. My Problem is that is was in Excellent shape. She even stayed indoors all winter long. Has her own bedroom. Now, I can't FIND a red book value on this bike, Can ANYONE help me find out this info??? We took the side fairings and hard bags off, they are stored. That is all still ok. we also have 2 sizes of Hard bags... a tank bag, and all the original papers. I am REALLY hoping that we can either get her fixed... or at least get fair value. Anyone with any ideas or info would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

body work surfaces from time to time.

there is an S2 section here in old school

If it does get totaled, please let us badwebbers know where the auction is to buy that puppy... It's just too nice to let slip away...

Kristina:

Do not total that bike.

I am in New York and if they are wanting to total it for $2,300 I will be there, cash in hand, tomorrow.

I don't know how the insurance laws work in New York, but in Michigan i have had them totaled by insurance company's before and told them i want to by it back. The title stays clean, you will probably have to settle for less money from them but you will have the bike and extra money for repairs. Anyway it doesn't hurt to ask. Don't let them take it.

in florida with my insurance company, they wouldn't reinsure the xb12scg cause it was totaled. i would have been better off just fixing it but when my daughter got hit on the m2, i got reimbursed for the value of the bike plus the other persons insurance company let me have the bike back for nothing. i made the arguement that it would be really hard to replace the m2 cause they don't make them no more and added the stuff that was done to it. check to make sure you can reinsure the bike if the insurance company totals it out.

I would have an appraiser appraise the bike, and then show the insurance company what a realistic value of the machine is. If they continue to contest it, get a lawyer.

Of course the insurance company wants to total it, they make the most (Or lose the least) money that way...

Thank You all for the suggestions and info. I told the husband that we will NOT be letting them take her. A friend of ours has her at his shop, and he is furious with the insurance company also. I am gathering all the info I can, and HOPING that it helps. Ideally, I would like to have the front fairing fixed, and bring her home. We have pics of the damage, we have before and after pics, but our biggest problem is finding out the value on it. It seems near impossible to find a value without calling in a specialist to look in person. I am Actually quite thankful now that we took the side fairings off of her though. They are still in spic and span shape. lol. It helped to minimize the damage.

That bike is the exact year and color of the one I got for my wife, Penny back in '97.
From experience, I can say that the fairing subframe (called 'spider by some) can be straightened and re-welded easily. (you'll find that the short mounting bars will be slightly bent) It's good that you took off the bags and lowers - they get pretty wadded with a minor spill. Turn signals are pretty cheap and surprisingly available. Mirrors not so much.

Wonderful bike - well worth the cost of repair - don't let 'em total it! (but you already heard THAT!)

you have first right of refusal on the salvage if totalled. if totalled is 2300, then salvage value is approx 5-600 leaving you with 17-1800 to complete your repairs. make that offer to the insurance company. you will receive paperwork from the insurance company to take to the dmv to get a salvage title. here, after repairs are made, the state police can do a roadworthy inspection form that you take back to the dmv to get another tag. you won't be able to get full coverage again on the bike, just liability.
good luck,
tim

Thanks for that info Tim. I will let the man know that!

Al... Thankfully, the mirror was in tact, just broke away from the front fairing. The signal light broke off, and the yellow plastic shattered, But the post and wires are still there.

I have some pics of the boo boo's that I am Uploading to www.Photobucket.com . Will post today.

Picture #3 in the first sequence is the only one that would concern me. It looks like the fairing stay is broken. But it is replacable or fixable. The pipes don't look bent so I wouldn't be concerned with them. Pegs, mount and brake lever are all ebay or BWB classified accessible parts.

You could part it out (especially with the bags) for more than the insurance company is offering. But I'd look to fix it before letting them total it.

I Didn't think it was as damaged as the insurance company wants us to believe... I didn't think it would take that much to fix it. Now to get the red book value, so the Insurance Co can see it is worth more than what they think.

All those parts are readily available from folks here or eBay,pipes can be polished, spider may be rewelded, that tank cover is barely scratched, you can do it all for less than 1000.00. Do a search on eBay,Cycletrader,Craigslist, and the old ads here to get an idea of actual worth of that bike.

Hi Kmhb3, your damage bike can be fix by a good fiberglass man and they can bend the support bar back for a reasonable price. If it was me. I would bend the support bar until the crack closes up, clamp it, tape it and glue it from the inside. That way you don't have to worry about painting it and from 5 feet away no one will see it. Ride the wheels off it while checking Ebay and other sources for parts. IMHO

FWIW, you can sand down the exhaust and once it's been run for awhile it will all return to the gold tint.
Insurance companies use prices for new material, shop prices to install them, and go low on the value. You can rebuild it to what it was for much less than what they'll provide. The more comparisons you can get the better off you'll by.
Look on eBay, but suggest you request anyone on the Badweb who's bought or sold a comparable S2T over the last year can send you pics and pricing to boost your case.

The insurance Company looked into it again. They are willing to fix it now! In a few weeks all should be well, and we should be back to riding! Thank You all for your help, and ideas!!!

By the way - duct tape (the standard gray stuff) is an almost perfect match to that bike's paint color!

(I probably don't need to explain why I know that)

I am at it again. I need Court's Book! LOL! We can't seem to find the blue "Buell" decals that go on the bike. Any Idea's? I tried Ebay, and am looking around other sites... If Anyone knows where I can find them, Please let me know where I can get them. Otherwise we will prolly be doing custom cuts... I don't wanna do that! LOL! Harley says the bike didn't come with the blue decals... however the book even has photo's of it! LOL!

Hahaha... Well, I thought I would let you all know she is back! She is all done up prettier than ever. I don't have any pics as of yet, But everything is all back to the way it is supposed to be. As soon as I can get pics I will post them, But she is currently at my in-laws house as it was rainy and yucky here. I have the typical "in-law" relationship... so I avoid any unnecessary visits. Hopefully the weather will clear up and we can get her home, tucked away in her bedroom for the winter. I do want to thank you all again for all your advice and help! You are all great!
