I now have about 3000 miles on a EBC brake rotor and fellers, its like I have two up front. I bought it from American Sport Bike because my stock rotor hot spotted about 1000 miles into ownership. I suffered with that POS for years before biting the bullet and getting a real brake. I've whipped this rotor hard in the mountains and it never fads and has not hot spotted yet. Do your selves a favor and get something other than the stock rotor.

Every stock rotor (Buell) I've seen, including XB and 1125r are hot spotted. Whats up with that? : ?

Hmm, I've out braked plenty of sport bikes on the track with the stock rotor. Still have it, still works great.

I've found significant differences with brake pads. But with a clean rotor (brake clean and pristine cloth) between pad changes it's always been enough to embarrass the R's and GSXR's on the track.

YMMV...

the spots are from the factory brake pads not the rotors.

I changed to EBC HH and they not only do not leave black spots, they cleaned off the ones from the stock pads.

I'm sure the EBC rotor is a good piece too, and assume it resists fade better.

Sloppy you obviously have some mad riding skills to out brake modern dual disk sportbikes with a single factory rotored tuber!

The fact that YOU can do it does not mean our brakes are as good!

I've beat many "quicker" bikes at the dragstrip because my Buell runs well and I can launch it well.

Does that mean I can or should post that our bikes are quicker than insert bike type I beat here?

I am satisfied with my tuber brakes, but they are not as powerful or fade resistant as can be found on modern sportbikes....

"I am satisfied with my tuber brakes, but they are not as powerful or fade resistant as can be found on modern sportbikes...."

My experience is in total agreement with these observations. Spot on.

I've had no problem with the stock rotors. When it came time to replace the front rotor I wasn't going to spend $400 for a stock one. Instead I went with a Braking Floating Rotor made in Italy. And it was about half the price!

I actually did have a problem with the stock rotors... I'm on my third one. Changing to different pads (Lydalls in my case) when I got my last new rotor (for only $120 at the time) kept it from glazing and starting the process of warping.

At the prices the stock rotors are going for now ($300!!!), I'll be getting a snazzy wave rotor like the one shown above... but I doubt the third rotor will warp like the two previous ones did.

That wave rotor does look cool...

Problem with tuber brakes?

They were ranked in the TOP 10 of best braking motorcycles by Motorcycle Consumer News.

And that's a bike mag that takes NO advertsing dollars, it's all paid for by subscribers.

Of course, we do have to remember that these bikes were designed OVER 9 Years old! With the fact that I can still outbrake modern bikes on the track is a testament to the POTENTIAL of the stock brake system.

As Scott pointed out, it's not the bike that makes it go fast, it's the ability of the RIDER!

You really want a hot spotted rotor? Those spots are hardened from over heating. Nothing can fix it other than back tempering the entire rotor, and its not worth it. I changed pads and cleaned the rotor, still "chattered" like crazy, because the hard spots were still there. Its not glazing..its hardened steel from heat. Scraping the surface will do nothing to fix it.

With the right rotor I have no problems with the brakes. They work fine. But I still hold by my original statement that the stock rotor SUCKS! Your mileage may vary.

I'm glad some of you never suffered through the crapping rotor experience. It was not pleasant. I'm just jazzed my brakes work right now.

Not doubting the troubles you had Jason, but for others that are reading this - there are spots that permanently damage the rotor and there are spots from overheating the factory brake pads.

Here is a photo of my rotor with stock pads - see the black spots?

Here is the same rotor after installing and riding with EBC HH pads.

I did not do any cleaning between pads - the pads cleaned up the rotors!

When it does, double up on the wave washers. I have over 6K on the doubled washers and no rattles yet. The operative word being "yet"

Still running a OEM rotor on my 1997 S3T, of course it is the second one because a HARLY-DAVIDSON technician bent the original one ...

It now has over 60K mile on it ...

Scott your gonna wanna get rid of that six point rotor when it starts rattling, but then with only 6K on your bike you won't be hearing it for awhile. Look now and be ready!

Scott:

That is also one of the "First Generation" 6 pin rotors as well.

That rotor was quickly superseded by a design that looks quite similar but can be distinguished as the cooling slots terminate between the button heads.

I have a complete set hanging in my office of all the various iterations during the testing of the disk.

If you need a pic of the new rotor let me know.

Jstfrfun, I have close to 15K on the bike now, sorry if I somehow/somewhere implied otherwise.

Court, so the 99's were still 1st generation?

Or has an original found it's way onto my bike? Sure - picture please!

I am partial to the way the 6 pin rotor mount mimics the PM wheel and will not readily give it up until/unless I have no choice or am offered proven superior braking over and above what it has now.

I love the look and the cool "whirring" sound it makes when you apply the brakes.

No they were not. In fact the Kelsey-Hayes test unit I have is dated 1997. That does not look like a 1999 rotor but I could be wrong.
