So anyways a couple of days ago I went to a buell bike night and while I was there I wanted to show off the new sound of the D&D exhaust I just put on my bike. So I started the bike up and reved it a couple of times not even going over 4,000 RPMs and then I was told that you are not supposed to do that, so I was just wandering if anybody knew anything about this and could enlighten me on this information. And I was wandering if the same goes for when you pull in the clutch and rev it also. | ||

Unless thats some weird rule that they have for meetings , I don't know what they're on about. Won't hurt the motor, unless you red line it for an hour or so. | ||

For me, I don't like free-revving a cold motor (not sure if yours was warmed up or not) because it blows head and base gaskets. It may have been a "neighborly consideration" rule, which I support, or it may have been misinterpreted as general squidliness (i.e. Japbikes, revving to the moon immediately upon startup). I also prefer not to pull in the clutch and rev or idle unless necessary. Less wear on throw-out bearings. | ||

Everyone pretty much knows exactly what a loud Buell sounds like. Revving it just for the sake of making noise is retarded. Especially if that group wants to keep meeting there. Don't pinch a loaf in someone else's pool! | ||

The exhaust note sounds so much better when the engine is accelerating under a load, winding out through the gears. Now that's a magical sound. | ||

I've always thought of people who rev their motors unnecessarily (bikes or cars)to make noise "throttle tuners" or "rod checkers." | ||

If you are going to rev the motor, put it in Second gear and do a proper burnout. the smoke really adds alot to the sound! Don't listen to the haters! Burnouts, wheelies, and healthy exahusts will always be cool. | ||

I still have never done a burnout (on a motorcycle) anywhere but at a dragstrip. However... a wheelie a day is good for the constitution and clears the mind. | ||

Don't get me wrong! The "daytona boss" "muffler" on my X1 is every bit as loud as a wileyco or D&D. I will never make that bike quiet! It should be heard when it's pushing you along though. | ||

I agree with DJK, the Evo Buell sounds great when wound through the gears. To answer your original question, although we all have done it at one point in our lives, reving an unloaded motor can float a valve, which can make a mess of your motor. At what point will your valve meet your piston, depends on a lot of factors. I have seen situations where a little reving did the motor in, as well as a stock 96 xl ( with the only addition being an 8000k rev limited race module ) be run several times in succession to rev limit. Which is why I like to hear that bad boy pulling hard coming out of a turn. It is sheer beauty to hear it resonate off the guard rails as you wait for the revs to pick up and grab the next gear ( Whoo, I need a cold shower) | ||

Well I don't know much about the side stand revvin procedure, But damn I just can't seem to shake the rollin in gear revvin ITCH!!! Its like the bike has its way with me. The feel and sound of it has got me outta control. Please help what's a guy to do??? There is a long underpass where I live that I'll purposely alter my route so I can go through it. I just can't resist it. I'm still not one of those stationary revvers though. I know plenty of people that are... it's just not my style. Never has been. | ||

I consider underpasses concert halls for motorcycles. I usually drop a gear or 2 and twist the throttle for maximum volume. | ||

I have always heard that stationary revving is a no-no but I can't see why the engine would care whether it was under load or not at 4000 rpm. Except perhaps that the primary chain would not know whether it should be pulled one way or the other and so might be flopping about. | ||

I was at a car show years ago where some guy who had the baddest Mustang I've ever seen (tubbed, slammed, blown) would start it and rev the bejeesus out of it every hour or so. Towards the end of the day when the crowd was really huge and waiting for it, he revved it so hard, he did something horrible to the engine... not sure what, but it was followed by an exremely loud shrill squeal... it was coming from him. I had a little respect for the guy because he didn't trailer his car to the show... but definitely trailered it back home. | ||

The only thing that belongs on a trailer is vehicles that are not street legal. (that is if you can't find a way to get them on the street without being caught!) Or if you are taking one home to rescue it! | ||

I've had track crew ASK me to rev my M2 while waiting for my turn to go out, then tell me how great it sounds when its on the track. I rev it in the garage (2-3k) after it warms up a bit when its sitting between track stints, to keep the carb clear. No matter when, I still dig the sound. | ||
