I have a 2000 M2 with the stock cast wheels (5" wide). The correct tire size is 170/60 17. I have always followed the lead of others without questioning it until I started racing the full season this year. I was looking for more choices of tire compounds, and I called Innovative Motorcycle Research, the North East Pirelli race tire dealer and former Buell race team owner. They always ran 180's on the cast wheels, and stated that it also quickened the turn in. I am on a half a season on 180's and I love them. My bike feels very stable both upright in the straights and at full lean. Mark Reynolds (former Lightning Series racer and current Moto ST pro racer for Wagner Aprilia) also ran 180's on cast wheels. A 180 tire will get squished on that rim and make the tires profile a little higher, IIRC. Judging by your other post about ride height issues, Id stay with the stock size tire and grab a seat from an M2 Low model. |

Torquemstr is right. Eboos...A 180 race tire has a totally different carcas shape and profile. You may have quicker turn in but you can't get on the gas at as steep of a lean angle because of the bulging side profile (of a street tire). You will have less rubber on the gound when at full lean angle without the benefit of the triangulated profile of a race tire. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/358319.html |

I found no benefit at all with a 180 tire squeezed onto a 5" rim. I only tried it one time 8 years ago and have only used 170's since. |

You can fit a 190 but why? |

"I called Innovative Motorcycle Research, the North East Pirelli race tire dealer and former Buell race team owner. Years ago, I noticed that most of the DOT legal racing compounds (if not all back then) weren't offered in sizes below 180. |

A 180 race tire has a totally different carcas shape and profile than a street tire. See my comment above about turn in vs. side grip and drive. I used to race an F2 and F3. They both ran a 160 on a 5 inch and 5.5 inch wheel. Now most bikes produced have at least a 6 inch wheel. The typical tire size changed because of the typical wheels size...not new knowledge for skinnier obsolete wheels. Look at a 180 race tire and then look at a 180 street tire. Totally different shape. If you have access to a race tires go for it. I run them on the street and have a 180 mounted now on my 5.5 PMs. I like the 170 best and wish I could find race take off 160s easily. You can fit a 190 on a 5 inch wheel and still clear the belt, but why? This is just the mucho is macho syndrome. I'm not trying to argue, simply have everyone look at why before they leap. To clearify my post above: I am running Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC1 (supersoft compound) tires. These are basicly Diablo Superbike slicks with a few threads cut into them to make them DOT legal. I have never tried running Diablo Corsas or any other 180 street tire on this bike. My last tires were Michelin Pilot Powers in 170mm. I am no longer riding on the street, and have been race or trackday only this year. |

Again, for those of you wanting the BIG tire, the 170-60-17 is the proper fit for the 5" rim, period....ah aaa, period! However not all is lost, Avon makes a 170-55-17 supermoto slick, or Kosman will widen your wheels for $400 and some change, to up to an inch and a half per total width increase......so if you want a 190-55-17 you can even have that. The proper width for a 180-55-17 is 5 1/2" to 6" for the 190. |
