Ok. so my speed sensor stopped working after my motor build. when i finally took it out i noticed that it had a lot of metal shavings on it. would this make it not work? i also have a race ecm, not sure if this would affect anything. thanks |

Yes. Clean off the metal shavings and put it back in. It's a hall-effect sensor with a magnet built in. If it's covered in metal shavings, it can't "see" anything. |

If it still doesn't work after cleaning, it's dead. Not uncommon on the tubers. I've gone through several myself. Buell fixed this in 03 with an updated part. |

I feel you. I had one last 300 miles. It shorted and blew my ignition fuse. I didn't know what the problem was, cost me $500 and a tow to find that out. The power for the sensor is 12 volts unregulated. There's a member who spent quite a bit of time researching this (Reepicheep) and he came up with the fix. You put a 5 volt regulator in line with the sensor, and it'll live a long and happy life. The new replacement sensor incorporates a 5 volt regulator, and on the XB series the ECM feeds it regulated 5 volts from the get-go. (After mid 03 I believe.) If your sensor works after cleaning it, you may want to install a regulator to keep it from blowing on you. Bill (reep) can provide you with the schematics, plus I'm pretty sure he posted them in the KV. |
