I asked about this around a year ago and the general opinion was that I needed to replace the rubber mounting ring. Onahog recommended the police bike visored rubber rings, which I did get. I finally got around to replacing these, and here's what I found. The original rubber ring is in good condition and installing the new one really didn't change anything. The speedometer just doesn't get pulled down tight against the instrument panel. The metal cup on the backside bottoms out on the threaded standoffs before it can put any pressure against the back of the rubber ring. I took a piece of 1/4" vinyl tubing and cut one side of it lengthwise with a razor blade. I secured this to the edge of the cup with some RTV, effectively making the cup a little deeper. Now when I tighten the nuts down on the cup, it puts some pressure on the rubber ring before the cup tightens down on the standoff. Now the speedometer is held down snug against the instrument panel. |

I believe that HD/Buell used some glue on the rubber to speedo casing to keep it from turning...The rubber has notches which holds it in place...The chrome back plates help to tighten things up on the cup end... Hb |

My 95 had acorn nuts securing the speedo, my 96 has regular nuts which means you can tighten it further... |
