The manual calls for a special type trans oil. I'm assuming thats available at the H-D store. Is there a viable substitute that'll get me thru the weekend? Thanks a bunch.

Formula + is the HD specific trans/primary fluid. You could run oil in it if you were in a pinch or another type of trans fluid. Just drain and refill with the correct stuff asap. Its also not good to mix synthetic fluid with non synthetic. But, again, in a pinch any fluid is better than no fluid at all.

Not good to mix synth/reg fluid?

Errrr, so what about synth blends?

Use the factory recommended weight fluid, don't worry about mixing. Personally I hate the sport trans fluid they suggest - I get terrible shifting and generally have a hell of a time finding neutral with that stuff.

I like the Syn 3, but any synth in the proper weight will reward your pocket book reduction with improved shifting and general transmission response.
