I finally got the X1 back together after I broke the primary chain and it launched itself out of the case. Now the fuel cap is really hard to get on and off. I thought there was a problem with the cap again, so I pulled the whole assembly apart to get to the bottom of the cap. When it's separated from he gasket, the cap goes on and off the retainer with no problems, but when I put the assembly back together, the rubber seems too tight and won't let the cap go on unless I force it, and then I can't get it off. It seems to have actually stripped the plastic part of the cap now, so I need to epoxy that in place. Long story short, what can be done to stretch the back into shape, or do I just need to pay the stealer for a new one? |

I've had the rubber out twice and was able to get it to work again. The rubber starts to dessicate and shrink when it's out of the vapor rich confines of the fuel tank. If you've reinstalled the rubber already, you can fill the tank partially with fuel and the vapors should get the rubber back into it's original shape. It's almost impossible to get the cap on or back off until you do this, so just let the cap rest on the filler without twisting the lock. If the rubber has been taken out, you could try dropping it in a gas can and fish it out after a day or two... that might get it back into shape. |

Heh. That's weird. What do they look like when they are new? |

DJ, right you are!! Iwent out tonight and the rubber gasket is as soft and supple as it was when I got the bike. How would thunk just a little time in the fumes would have fixed my stiff gasket. Now I need to fix the loose cap problem where I think I stripped the plastic. I saw there were fixes using epoxy, just don't know what to use. |

HD/BMC has that gasket. With just a little hylomar it's an easy replacement. Joe |

Been there, done that! I just bought a new funnel but JB Welded the clamp. Just be careful tightening the vent cap though. The first time I put it back together after painting my tank I broke that sucker right off doing that one last bit of torque. Iowa-Mike |
